Hendricks County obituary index updated

Entries from 2013 have been added to the database Deaths from The Republican's Year in Review, which is on the Hendricks County GenWeb site. The Republican is a weekly newspaper published in Danville, Indiana. Once a year it publishes a special "Year in Review" issue, which includes a listing of the deaths that were mentioned in each issue of that year.

This database includes the person's name and the issue of the newspaper their obituary appeared in. It now covers 1892-2013.

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 52 (March 1907 - February 1908), in March 1907 Maggie Vandagriff was granted a divorce from Edward G. Vandagriff (case #7836). The court ruled that at the time of their marriage, Edward had another legal wife, from whom he had not been divorced.

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 52 (March 1907 - February 1908), in April 1907 Jennie H. Smith was granted a divorce from Henry H. Smith (case #7872). Jennie was also given custody of their children - Lillie Smith, Pearl Smith, May Smith, Bernice Smith, Eddie Smith, Earl Smith and Cecil Smith - and Henry was ordered to pay $20 a month for child support.

In September 1907, he was fully discharged.

Sadie POPE granted divorce (1907)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 52 (March 1907 - February 1908), in October 1907 Sadie C. Pope was granted a divorce from James H. Pope (case #7944). Sadie was also given custody of their children - Urban J.N. Pope and Ellen Elizabeth Pope - and James was ordered to pay $10 a month in child support.

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 52 (March 1907 - February 1908), Ellis Sawyer (case #4433) had been committed to the Indiana State Reformatory in Jeffersonville on November 7, 1904 and paroled on July 20, 1906. In August 1907, he was fully discharged.

Viola (GORMAN) ISENHOWER granted divorce (1907)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 52 (March 1907 - February 1908), in October 1907 Viola E. Isenhower was granted a divorce from Earl E. Isenhower (case #7929). The court ruled that Earl had failed to provide support for more than 2 years and had treated Viola cruelly. She was also allowed to change her name back to her maiden name, Viola A. Gorman.

Anna BERLIN granted divorce (1907)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 52 (March 1907 - February 1908), in September 1907 Anna M. Berlin was granted a divorce from William Berlin (case #7937). William had been served with the divorce papers in Pike County, Indiana but had failed to appear in court. Anna was also given custody of their daughter, Carrie H. Berlin.

John HAMILTON pleads guilty to grand larceny (1907)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 52 (March 1907 - February 1908), in November 1907 John A. Hamilton (age 39) pled guilty to the crime of grand larceny (case #4671). He was fined $5 and sentenced to the Indiana State Prison for a term of 1 to 14 years.

Lenora CRANE granted divorce (1908)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 52 (March 1907 - February 1908), in February 1908 Lenora A. Crane was granted a divorce from Thomas W. Crane (case #8021). Thomas had been served with papers in Floyd County, Georgia. The court found that Thomas had abandoned his wife and 3 children (Ruby Crane, age 14; Claude Crane, age 13; Mary Crane, age 9) without cause back in 1901. Lenora was awarded custody of the children, as well as $3,000 in alimony.

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 52 (March 1907 - February 1908), in May 1907 Sarah M. Blacketer was granted a divorce from James W. Blacketer (case #7689). Sarah was also given custody of their daughter, Mary E. Blacketer.

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 52 (March 1907 - February 1908), in May 1907 Ruby Gaston was granted a divorce from Frederick C. Gaston (case #7865). Ruby, a resident of Coatesville whose occupation was housekeeper, was also awarded custody of their children - Frederick Gaston (age 9) and Mildred Gaston (age 7).

This index is from the Hendricks County Assessor's plat book and includes the Congressional Township, Range and Section that the land was located in.

Roy and Carl RUNION sentenced to Indiana Boys' School (1906)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 51 (March 1906 - February 1907), in September 1906 Roy Runion and Carl Runion pled guilty to the crime of burglary (case #4562). Both were sentenced to the Indiana Boys' School in Plainfield until they turned 21.

Carl was given custody of their daughter, Mabel Masten, with Bessie allowed to visit the child not more than 1/2 of the time during the year.

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 51 (March 1906 - February 1907), in December 1906 Mary Yeates was granted a divorce from Thomas J. Yeates (case #7797). Mary was also given custody of their daughter, Ida Yeates. Should Mary ever remarry, the judge left open the possibility of revisiting the custody question.

The Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library now has a subscription to Fold3, one of the premier sites for military records. Researchers who visit the library's Indiana Room can access Fold3's collection of 429 million military records. This subscription can also be accessed at home by those who have a Plainfield library card.
