Danville library's genealogy group to discuss Indiana Territory
The Danville library's Genealogy Nuts genealogy group will meet on Monday, September 9 at 1 pm in the library's program room on the ground floor. Elizabeth Monroe, a history professor at IUPUI, will discuss the Indiana Territory, and the history of some of its earliest residents. From 1800 to 1816, Indiana’s territorial officers consisted of a governor and four judges appointed by the President of the United States. In 1805, the citizens of the territory were permitted to elect a legislature. All of the actions of the governor and legislature were recorded by the Secretary of the territory, and all of the actions of the judges were recorded by the Clerk of the Court. Of the states admitted to the union between 1800 and 1820, Indiana is the only state that has the records of all three parts of the territorial government.
