List of Clay Township landowners in 1940 added

An index of the landowners in Clay Township in 1940 has been added to the Land Records section of the Hendricks County GenWeb site. This index was compiled from the Hendricks County Assessor's collection of plat books and lists the Congressional Township, Range and Section that the land was located in.

The Hendricks County Government's Archive has digital files of the plat books for scattered years between 1852 and 1940.

Ground broken for Cascade High School (1963)

According to a newspaper article, on Saturday, September 14, 1963 a groundbreaking ceremony was held by the Mill Creek Community School Corporation (which represented Liberty Township, Clay Township and Franklin Township) for the new Cascade High School in Clayton. The building was to cost $1.5 million and when completed would serve the students from the former high schools of Clayton, Amo and Stilesville.

The site of the new school was described in the article as being on Jacktown Road (aka County Road 200 West), north of US 40.

Civil War widow Mary M. HOPWOOD dies (1953)

WIDOW OF CIVIL WAR VET DIED MONDAY
Mrs. Mary M. HOPWOOD, age 94 years, widow of Mote R. Hopwood, Civil War veteran, passed away at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Freeman Cooper, southeast of Amo Monday morning.

Funeral services were held at the Clayton Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon.

Mrs. Hopwood is survived by two grandchildren, Mrs. Freeman Cooper, and Robert R. Hubbard of Memphis, Tennessee; four great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

An index of the students in grades 9 through 12 at Cascade High School in Clayton in 1991 has been added to the Hendricks County GenWeb site. This index was compiled from the Cascade High School 1991 yearbook, Colossus. This yearbook is in the collection of the Plainfield library.

NOTE: Cascade High School opened in Clayton in the fall of 1964 as the consolidation of 3 school districts - Clayton, Amo and Stilesville.

Joseph CARTER dies of polio (1954)

COATESVILLE MAN DIES FROM POLIO
Joseph O. Carter, a farmer of the Coatesville community, died Thursday afternoon in the Robert Long Hospital, Indianapolis, from bulbar polio. Mr. Carter became ill Monday morning and was taken to the hospital Wednesday where he was put in an iron lung.

Born in 1916 in Clay Township, he was the son of Arthur Lee Carter and Maude Carter Darnell. He was married to Marion McClure in 1940. He was a member of the Amo Baptist Church and a deacon in the church. He was a graduate of the Amo High School after which he began his farming career.

Funeral services were Sunday afternoon from the Amo Baptist Church in charge of the Rev. A.E. Chastain. Burial was in the Amo Cemetery.

Survivors are the widow, Marian; two sons, Roger Lee and Dale Allen; his mother, Mrs. Maude Carter Darnell, and a sister, Mrs. Hugh Isenberg, all of Coatesville.

Teacher Edward BRINEGAR charged with assaulting a student (1949)

According to an April 1949 article, Edward Brinegar, who taught 5th and 6th grades at the Amo school, was charged with assault and battery in Hendricks County Circuit Court. The charge, which was brought on behalf of Ray O'Dell, Sr., stemmed from a March 18 incident with O'Dell's son, 12-year-old Ray A. O'Dell, Jr. Brinegar's lengthy statement (published in the article) referred to the paddling he had done of his student for violating school rules. He waived arraignment and pleaded not guilty.

NOTE: According to Hendricks County Circuit Court Order Book 98 (1 April 1949 - 6 March 1950), the State of Indiana vs. Edward Brinegar was case #8920. On May 16, 1949, the prosecutor asked to dismiss the case, and the court granted the motion.
