Danville genealogy group to discuss book about "Crime of the Century"

The Danville library's Genealogy Nuts genealogy group will meet on Monday, March 11 at 1 pm in the library's program room on the ground floor. Putnam County Historian Larry Tippin will talk about his book, The Betrayal of Pearl Bryan: Unraveling the Gilded Age Mystery That Captivated a Nation. The book chronicles the true story of how in 1896 Pearl Bryan of Greencastle travelled to Cincinnati and was killed by the father of her unborn child, events which newspapers dubbed the "Crime of the Century." Pearl's parents, Alexander S. and Susan Farrow Bryan, lived in Hendricks County until 1854, near New Winchester. After the talk, copies of his book will be available for purchase and signing by the author.

Danville library to host book talk about "Crime of the Century"

The Danville library will host a book talk by Putnam County Historian Larry Tippin about his book, The Betrayal of Pearl Bryan: Unraveling the Gilded Age Mystery That Captivated a Nation, on Thursday, December 13 at 2 pm. The book is the story of how in 1896 Pearl Bryan of Greencastle travelled to Cincinnati and was killed by the father of her unborn child, events which newspapers dubbed the "Crime of the Century." Pearl's parents, Alexander S. and Susan Farrow Bryan, lived in Hendricks County until 1854, near New Winchester.

This program will be held in the library's program room on the ground floor and pre-registration is required - to register online, visit the Events Calendar section of the library's website, or call (317) 745-2604.

Grace (GREENLEE) WALTON dies in Danville (1977)

NORTH SALEM – Grace Walton, 77, of North Salem, died at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Hendricks County Hospital. She had been in failing health. A graduate of New Winchester High School, Mrs. Walton was a member of the North Salem Christian Church and North Marion Club. She was born April 26, 1900, a daughter of T. A. and Verna Owens Greenlee. She married William Hobart Walton in November, 1909. Surviving are a son, Paul, of North Vernon; a brother Howard Greenlee of Danville; five sisters, Maxine Hopper of Jamestown, Lorene Seaman of Evansville, Lydia Beck of Bowling Green, Ohio; Marion Jefferies of Hemet, Calif., and Doris Johnston of North Brook, Ill.; and five grandchildren. Two brothers, Phillip and George Greenlee, preceded her in death. Services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Porter Funeral Home here with the Rev. Earl Davis officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in North Salem. Friends may call at the funeral home 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Hendricks County votes on consolidating school districts (1962)

According to a newspaper article, in the primary held in May 1962, Hendricks County voters had rejected a referendum to consolidate the schools in 5 townships - Center Township, Marion Township, Eel River Township, Middle Township and Union Townships - into one corporation, called the Northwest Community School Corporation.

A new referendum was put on the ballot for the general election in November 1962. It would consolidate the schools in Center Township and Marion Township into one corporation to be called the Danville Community School Corporation. According to a November 8, 1962 article, this referendum passed.

There was another referendum on the ballot that would consolidate the schools in Eel River Township, Union Township and Middle Township into one corporation to be called the North Hendricks Community School Corporation. According to a November 8, 1962 article, this referendum failed.

Merger of Danville library with New Winchester rejected (1986)

According to a newspaper article, in May 1986, the Danville library invited Marion Township/New Winchester (which did not have a library) to join with Center Township and create a merged library district, where Marion Township residents would pay some property taxes to support the library, and in return they would have a representative on the library board. The invitation was in response to the end of a federal grant, which had allowed residents of townships that did not have a library to be served by the Danville library. Danville library had last made an invitation to Marion Township to merge in 1978.

In response to this proposed merger, registered voters in Marion Township - particularly senior citizens - filed a remonstrance with Marion Township Trustee Elvin Ray Cassity and his Township Advisory Board (which consisted of Kenneth Mason, William Huntley and Darrell Plunkett). Their remonstrance petition showed 203 signatures from registered voters against the merged library, and 48 signatures in favor of the merger.

Township Trustee Elvin Cassity stated in the newspaper article that Marion Township was primarily a farming community and the library tax would put a burden upon its residents. He hoped that the library would "keep true to its word and not bring it up again since the numbers clearly show how the people in the township feel."

Deaths of Lester JOHNSON and Martha Lucille (HAWKINS) JOHNSON (1950)

DOUBLE FUNERAL SERVICES MONDAY
Double funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Baker Chapel for Lester V. and Martha Lucille Johnson of Bainbridge.

Mr. Johnson shot his 28-year-old wife Saturday evening with a shotgun at their home northeast of Bainbridge and then took his own life. Dr. Gilbert Rhea, Putnam County Coroner, ruled the deaths as murder and suicide.

He was separated from his wife, and under court order not to return to their home. He was a former employee of Marmon-Herrington, Indianapolis, but at the time was unemployed. She was a waitress at a restaurant in Bainbridge.

Immediate survivors are six children, Shirley Ann, age 11; David, 10; Lester, Jr., 8; Bonnie Lee, 6; Caroline Sue, 5, and Diana Kay, 4.

Other survivors of Mr. Johnson include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Johnson of North Salem; five sisters, one of whom is Mrs. James Young of New Winchester, and four brothers including Vernon, Dudley and Wayne of North Salem.

Other survivors of Mrs. Johnson are her parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Floyd Hawkins of Indianapolis, and two sisters, Mrs. Opal Crouch and Mrs. Grace Money of Danville.

Both bodies were interred in the West Newton Cemetery.
