Book of Brownsburg historic photos published

Linda Lichte Cook of the Brownsburg Public Library has published a book of old photos of Brownsburg, part of the Images of America series by Arcadia Publishing. These photos come from the library's collection. This book, titled Brownsburg, can be purchased through Amazon.com and other booksellers.

The woman in this photo is unknown - the back of the photo says "Grandma Bailey". It was taken by a Danville photographer about 1890.

PHOTO: John W. Figg and Family near Amo (1908)

This photo is of John W. Figg and family at his home near Amo around 1908. John W. Figg (holding ??) is on the left; John's half-brother Ed Warren is in the center; Osie Figg (holding Lucille Warren) is on the right. The boy seated on the bottom-most step is Charles Warren; the 2 boys sitting on the top step are unknown - they may be related to the Figgs.

John W. Figg was a schoolteacher and later become superintendent of the Plainfield schools. He died in 1927. This house's address today is 4489 West County Road 300 South, Danville.

Civil War Photo of Josiah MARVEL

The Indiana Historical Society's Facebook page posted this photo of Josiah Marvel of Hendricks County, with the following information:

"Meet Union soldier and Hendricks County boy Josiah Marvel. Although only 15 years old, Marvel enlisted in the Seventh Regiment Indiana Volunteers in 1861. At the time, enlarging photographs was tedious work, and specialists reproduced and enhanced them with a crayon to increase contrast and hide blemishes. This portrait is a beautiful example of this early, but complicated, photographic process."

Plainfield Library Adds Plainfield High School Senior Class Photos 1922-1964

Plainfield Public Library has digitized their collection of senior class photos from Plainfield High School 1922-1964 and added them to their website. These photos also help fill in the missing years in their yearbook collection.

This photo was taken in the 1930's-1950's, probably in Liberty Township, Hendricks County, Indiana. The building is not known - is it a school or a church? Who are all the people standing in front of it - is it possibly a reunion?

Historic Photos of Plainfield Book Published

A book of historic photos of Plainfield, its people and businesses has been published. The book, titled Plainfield, was published by Arcadia Publishing as part of its Images of America series. The photos were compiled by Reann Poray, who is manager of the Indiana Room at Plainfield Public Library.

Plainfield Library To Host Family Photos Program

Photo preservation and restoration expert Joan Hostetler will present a free program, "Care and Identification of Family Photos," on Saturday, October 6 at Plainfield Public Library. The program, which begins at 11 am, will show you how to identify, date, preserve and display your heirloom photos. Participants are encouraged to bring interesting, mystery or problem photos for evaluation. Hostetler is a graduate of the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and received her MFA in imaging arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology. She is the co-owner of Heritage Photo & Research Services, which specializes in local history research, photo preservation and digitization, and archives management.

Plainfield Library To Show Plainfield in Photos

Wonder what Plainfield looked like in the late 1800's and early 1900's? Reann Poray, manager of the Indiana Room at Plainfield Public Library, will show some early photos of the town in a program at Plainfield library on Monday, March 17 from 7 to 8 pm. In the program, entitled "Plainfield's Past in Pictures," you'll learn about the history of Plainfield, including its schools and churches.

PRESNELL/MOON 1898 Photo Found

The Family Photo Reunion blog has a post about a photo they found of William Calvin Presnell and Claudie Ethel Moon (who were married in Hendricks County in 1898) that was taken by a Danville photographer. The blog post also notes that acccording to the 1906 Canada census for Manitoba, William C. and Claudie Presnell moved to Saskatchewan in 1905 and lived in the town of Humboldt.
