According to a legal notice, in June 1981 Michael Lee Mitchell filed a petition in the Hendricks County Superior Court (case # A 81-18) to adopt Jeffrey Ray Spear, a minor. His biological mother was listed as Sarah Faith Mitchell; his biological father was listed as Tony Ray Spear. The case was scheduled to be heard 30 days after publication of the legal notice.

Loren Ray MITCHELL dies in fire (1953)

SEVEN-YEAR-OLD BELLEVILLE LAD BURNED TO DEATH YESTERDAY
A 7-year-old Belleville grade school boy was burned to death yesterday noon while playing in a "playhouse" in the haymow of his father's barn, 2 miles south of Belleville on State Road 39.
Loren Ray Mitchell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Mitchell, was home from school yesterday because the heating plant at the Belleville grade school was out of operation. He and a brother, Larry, age 9, were in the "playhouse" when the barn caught fire.
The cause of the fire was believed to be defective wiring. The barn contained a large amount of hay, five or six calves, a corn picker and some other small farm equipment.
The charred body of the lad was found in the southeast corner of the razed structure. The mass was identified by Coroner F.N. Wright as that of a human body.
The brother, Larry, escaped injury, but apparently the fire burned out the side of the barn causing it to cave-in on the other land.
Fire departments from Danville, Plainfield and Clayton were called to put out the fire, but it was beyond control.
It was reported at the scene of the tragedy that Loren had eight brothers and sisters, the youngest being 1 1/2 years old.

James Clayton SPEAR sues for loss of eye (1953)

YOUTH ASKS $15,000 FOR LOSS OF ONE EYE
A rye beard which destroyed the sight of his eye is the basis of a suit for $15,000 filed Friday in circuit court by James Clayton Spear, age 19, against Eugene Mitchell, Cleo Worrell, and Lester Worrell. Since the plaintiff is under age, the suit was filed by his father, Herman Spear.
According to the complaint, the defendants operate a grain threshing business. It is alleged that young Spears, who lives south of North Salem, was employed by the defendants on July 1, 1953, and was threshing grain on the Everett Hardwick farm, 5 miles northwest of Danville, when a rye beard got in his eye.
The complaint avers that it was necessary to remove the injured eye and install an artificial eye.
The suit charges that the defendants failed to comply with the state Workmen's Compensation Act and did not carry insurance on their employees.
NOTE: According to Hendricks County Circuit Court order book 103 (18 September 1954 - 15 October 1955), on September 28, 1954, in case #19454 (James Clayton Spear b/n/f Herman Spear vs. Eugene Mitchell, Cleo Worrell & Lester Worrell), the jury found for the defendants. The plaintiff was ordered to pay for the court costs.

Clara MITCHELL granted divorce (1922)
As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 71 (October 1921 - September 1922), in March 1922 Clara B. Mitchell was granted a divorce from Chester E. Mitchell (case #10878). She was also awarded custody of their daughter, Louise Mitchell (age 14) and Chester was ordered to pay her $8 in child support every 2 weeks.

Recount ordered for Center Township Trustee election (1914)
As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 60 (March 1914 - February 1915), in November 1914, Martin Mitchell filed a petition (case #9282) for a recount of the ballots for the November 3 election of the Center Township Trustee, in which George L. Christie had been declared the winner.
L.A. Barnett, Ed Crawley and J.E. Humston were appointed by the court to do the recount. They declared the results of their recount to be:
--Martin Mitchell - 358 votes received
--George L. Christie - 355 votes received
--John M. Stout - 204 votes received
Martin Mitchell was declared the winner, by a margin of 3 votes over George L. Christie.

George W. MITCHELL obituary (1960)

George W. Mitchell, 91, 812 S. Green St., died Sunday morning in Culver Hospital, where he had been a patient six days. He was a native of Pittsboro, born July 2, 1868 to William N. and Matilda Mitchell. He was married to Eva Irwin, who preceded him in death in November, 1957. Mr. Mitchell, who was employed at Mid-States Steel & Wire Co. for 24 years, had been retired since 1941. He and Mrs. Mitchell began housekeeping in North Salem and moved to Crawfordsville in February, 1915. He had served in the U. S. Army. Mr. Mitchell was a member of the First Christian Church here.
Survivors include two sons, Claude (Lonnie) Mitchell and William (Diddy) Mitchell of Crawfordsville; four grandchildren, Edward Coletta of Indianapolis, George Coletto of Washington, D. C., Jack Mitchell of Muscatine, Ia., and Mrs. Shirley Hood of Arthur, Ill., and six great-grandchildren. Services are announced for 2 p. m. Tuesday at the Bright Funeral Home with Rev. Paul E. Million officiating and burial in Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
