Memorial for Christian C. Nave (1884)

Hendricks County Civil Order Book Volume 27 (March 1884 - April 1885) includes a memorial for lawyer Christian C. Nave, who died August 3, 1884:

DEATH OF CHRISTIAN C. NAVE
Come now L.M. Campbell, E.G. Hogate and Charles Foley and present to the Court a memorial relative to the death of Christian C.Nave, a member of the Bar of this Court, which on motion was ordered spread of record as the sentiments of the Court and members of the Bar thereof and which is accordingly done and is in words as follows, to wit:

The undersigned as a committee appointed by the Bar of Danville to put in form the sentiments of the bar relative to the labors and life of the late Col. C.C. Nave, sys as the sentiments of the bar, that in the indomitable energy and ceaseless labor exhibited by him in the discharge of his professional duties, they have much to admire and initiate. He has closed a professional career in Danville, continuing almost for fifty years, and during all of that time we three think it probable, that the interests of none of his clients ever suffered by reason of any neglect or any inattention on his part, a commendation that can be spoken of scarcely any other lawyers. When he undertook a cause, he devoted himself to the interests of his clients to the exclusion of every other consideration. He was a public spirited citizen and contributed largely to every enterprise that was calculated to develop the country, by some of which he lost large sums of money. He was a clever neighbor, a faithful husband and kind and indulgent father. More than thirty two years ago his wife died, leaving him with five children to raise, and every old citizen of Danville will bear cheerful testimony as to his faithful endeavors in that regard. To those who, knowing him only of late years, looked upon him as a fretful and petulant man, we beg to remind them that for almost a third of a century he led the lonely wife of a widower and that for many years his children have been married and gone, and that incident to the misfortune of humanity, he met with much that was harrowing to his very soul. We only wonder that he could endure so much so long and perform his part so well as he did. At the ripe age of nearly eighty-one years he has been gathered to his father's. Peach to his ashes.

Indiana Legislature Validates Town of North Salem's Incorporation (1903)

According to Acts of 1903, Chapter 164 [approved March 9, 1903], the incorporation of the town of North Salem in Hendricks County is hereby legalized - all its elections, its proceedings and ordinances (including levying/collection of taxes) are hereby declared to be legal and valid.

Austin Pierson Earns A Belated $218 Salary As Middle Township Trustee (1903)

According to Acts of 1903, Chapter 28 [approved February 25, 1903], Austin Pierson is to be paid $218 by the Hendricks County Commissioners, as payment for his salary as the township trustee for Middle Township in 1882. The act says that Pierson served as Middle Township Trustee from April 1882 until April 1886, and that his annual report for 1882 mentioned a salary of $218, which the county commissioners approved, but when he turned over his township funds in 1886, he forgot to deduct the $218 from it.

Hendricks County Formed By Indiana Legislature (1824)

According to Acts of 1824, Chapter 19 [approved December 20, 1823], effective April 1, 1824, Hendricks County is formed out of part of Wabash County, with these boundaries:

• Beginning at southeast corner of Section 20 in Township 14 North, Range 2 East
• Then west, 20 miles to the east line of Putnam County
• Then north 20 miles with said line, to the northwest corner of Section 18 in Township 17 North, Range 2 West
• Then east 20 miles to the northwest corner of Marion County
• Then south 20 miles with said line, back to the beginning.

These county commissioners are appointed:

• William Templeton of Lawrence County
• William McCulloch of Monroe County
• Calvin Fletcher of Marion County
• Abel Cole of Shelby County
• John Smiley of Johnson County

The county commissioners are to meet at the house of the late William Ballard on the second Monday in July 1824. They will also hold a special session on the first Monday in May 1824 for the purpose of appointing a county assessor. Within 12 months after selecting a site, they will erect a building for a courthouse.

Hendricks County probate records - work session in Plainfield

Want to get an idea of what life was like in the mid-1800's? Stop by the Plainfield Public Library on Saturday, July 27 any time from 10 am to 4 pm to help unfold and organize some of Hendricks County's probate records.

This is part of the Indiana Genealogical Society's continuing effort to preserve and digitize Hendricks County's early probate records, which are currently stored in the courthouse basement. Unfolding and organizing the documents is crucial preparation for the end goal - being digitized and put online for free access at the Indiana Genealogical Society's website.

Since the Indiana Genealogical Society began this project, almost 3,000 probate records have been worked on, and 700 records are online. These records include receipts from doctors for making house calls, orders for tombstones (including the inscriptions to be written on them), and even original documents for Civil War service and a land purchase from the federal government.

Town of Belleville Incorporated in 1850

In Acts of 1850, Chapter 324 [approved January 8, 1850], the town of Belleville in Hendricks County (located in Liberty Township) was officially incorporated. The act specified that Jonathan Cope, Anthony W. Shiveley, Lawrence A. Johnson, John E. Johnson and David E. Carter were appointed trustees of the town until its first official election could be held on the 4th Monday of January, 1850. Subsequent elections would be held each year on the 4th Monday of January, with 7 trustees to be elected. Every white male who lived in the town limits and had resided there 3 months prior to the election was eligible to vote. All males in town limits who were not exempted were to work on the town's roads between 2 and 4 days each year, under the auspices of the town marshal.
