Marriage license of Homer HOWARD found in Westfield (1950)

According to a newspaper article, part of the 1931 Hendricks County marriage license of Homer Howard and Dorothy Elizabeth Roberts was recovered in Westfield, Hamilton County, Indiana in 1950. The license had been lost in March 1948 as part of the damage from the "Good Friday" tornado that hit Danville and Coatesville. The article states that the Howards' 14-year-old son, Donald Howard, was among those who had been killed by the tornado.

Indiana changes marriage law (1958)

CLERK HUGHES SAYS MARRIAGE LAW IS EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1
Claude Hughes, clerk of the Hendricks County Circuit Court, announces that changes made by the 1957 General Assembly in the marriage laws will be effective January 1, 1958.

The most radical changes in the new law are:

1. Three full days must elapse after making application for a license before the marriage license can be issued.
2. Couple must have written proof of their ages.
3. A written medical examination report must be submitted at the time the application is made.
4. The county fee for the license is $5.00 payable with the application.
5. Written consent must be given if the male is under 21 years of age or the female under 18 years of age.
6. One or both must be residents of the county where the license is obtained. If both applicants live out of state, then they must be married in the county where the license is obtained.

NOTE: Before this, the fee for the marriage license was $2, and the marriage license could be issued immediately after the application was filled out.

Harriet Jane NICHOLS to wed in Germany (1957)

Miss Harriet Jane Nichols of North Salem, now teaching in the Oliver P. Morton High School at Hammond, will become the bride of David James Kluxdal, who is now in Germany with the United States Air Force. Miss Nichols will fly from Indianapolis February 9 for Germany where the couple will be married.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Franklin Nichols of North Salem. The bridegroom-elect is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Iver Kluxdal of Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The bride-elect was graduated from Indiana University School of Business. She is a member of Delta Pi Epsilon sorority. Mr. Kluxdal was graduated from the Air Force Language School at Indiana University.

Ancestry.com adds Indiana vital records databases

A 1917 birth record for John Noble Patterson of Brown Township, Hendricks County

If you have a personal subscription to Ancestry.com, or your local library has an institutional subscription, you can access their new databases for:

• Indiana birth records (1907-1940)
• Indiana death records (1899-2011)
• Indiana marriage records (1958-2005)
  

These 3 databases are a result of an agreement announced in October 2014 between Ancestry.com and the Indiana state government. One of the terms of the agreement is that Ancestry has the exclusive right to host these databases for the first 3 years.

The majority of these records were digitized from existing microfilm; therefore the quality of the image may vary.

NOTE: Indiana began requiring the recording of births and deaths in 1882; however, at that time, the records were kept by the health department in each county. It was only in January 1900 that copies of death records began to be sent to the state, and in October 1907 that copies of birth records began to be sent to the state. Similarly, a state law in July 1958 began requiring a copy of marriage records (which reside in the courthouse in each county) to be sent on to the state. The state's version of the marriage record may not have all the information (or signatures) that may be seen in the county's version.

Maxine CURTIS and Reginald COX marry in Greenfield (1929)

POPULAR YOUNG PEOPLE MAKE VOWS AT GREENFIELD
One of the interesting weddings of the early fall is that of Miss Maxine Curtis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Curtis, East Broadway, to Reginald Cox, son of Mrs. Walter Cox. The ceremony was performed Thursday, September 5, at Greenfield by Rev. Freeland of the Methodist Episcopal Church. They returned that evening to their newly and cozily furnished home on the Cox farm. Mrs. Cox is one of our most popular and accomplished girls, a member of the local Methodist Episcopal church, a graduate of the Danville High School, also of the Madame Blaker School, Indianapolis, and the Teacher's Training Course, Central Normal College. For two years she has taught at Cambridge City. Mr. Cox is a graduate of the Pittsboro High School and attended Central Normal College. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cox. Both young people have the congratulations and best wishes of a large following of friends.

Marriage of William B. SPURLOCK and Linda TAYLOR declared void (1970)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Order Book 116 (January 1969 - March 1970), in February 1970, the court heard this case (case # C 70-9). The case showed that when William B. Spurlock and Linda Taylor applied for a Hendricks County marriage license on April 25, 1964, they did so with a birth certificate that showed the bride's name as being Brenda Sue Morris. They were subsequently married on May 2, 1964, by Center Township Justice of the Peace R.B. Pickard. They had 2 children together, Connie Regina Spurlock (age 2) and Kathy Lynn Spurlock (age 1), and at the time of this court case, Linda was pregnant with another child.

The court declared their 1964 marriage to be void, since it was given under a fraudulent identity, but all the children from this marriage were declared to be legitimate.

Judy NEWLIN and Larry WHITE marriage annulled (1964)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Order Book 111 (July 1963 - October 1964), on August 8, 1964, Judy Carol White's petition for an annulment of her marriage to Larry Dean White (case # C64-132) was granted. The court order noted that she was only 15 years old at the time of the marriage, and thus was unable of entering into a legal contract.

NOTE: Hendricks County marriage records show that the marriage of Judy Carol Newlin and Larry Dean White occurred on 6 September 1962, where she listed her age as 19 (birthdate August 27, 1943). On 8 August 1964, she married Richard Melvin Castiglione, having gotten a waiver of the 3-day waiting period. On the 1964 marriage application, she listed her age as 17 (birthdate as August 27, 1947). She included an affidavit from her parents consenting to the marriage.

Ernest NUGENT granted annulment (1953)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 101 (June 1952 - September 1953), in January 1953 Ernest W. Nugent was granted an annulment from Carrie E. Nugent (case #19180). Their marriage of October 5, 1952 was declared to be void because it had been brought about by Carrie's fraud and deception.
