His biological father, Van Robert Chestnut, was listed as not a resident of Indiana. The case was scheduled to be heard in court on March 12, 1970.

Adoption of Jerald Franklin NEWLAN (1963)

Loren Ray MITCHELL dies in fire (1953)

SEVEN-YEAR-OLD BELLEVILLE LAD BURNED TO DEATH YESTERDAY
A 7-year-old Belleville grade school boy was burned to death yesterday noon while playing in a "playhouse" in the haymow of his father's barn, 2 miles south of Belleville on State Road 39.

Loren Ray Mitchell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Mitchell, was home from school yesterday because the heating plant at the Belleville grade school was out of operation. He and a brother, Larry, age 9, were in the "playhouse" when the barn caught fire.

The cause of the fire was believed to be defective wiring. The barn contained a large amount of hay, five or six calves, a corn picker and some other small farm equipment.

The charred body of the lad was found in the southeast corner of the razed structure. The mass was identified by Coroner F.N. Wright as that of a human body.

The brother, Larry, escaped injury, but apparently the fire burned out the side of the barn causing it to cave-in on the other land.

Fire departments from Danville, Plainfield and Clayton were called to put out the fire, but it was beyond control.

It was reported at the scene of the tragedy that Loren had eight brothers and sisters, the youngest being 1 1/2 years old.

Adoption of Darcy Lynn CARLIN (1965)

According to a legal notice, in June 1965 there was a petition filed in the Hendricks County Superior Court (case # A 65-17) to adopt Darcy Lynn Carlin, a minor. Her biological father, Stan Carlin, was listed as whereabouts unknown. The case was scheduled to be heard in court on September 22, 1965.

Avon bank gets first drive-up window in Hendricks County (1958)

According to a newspaper article, on October 15, 1958, the Danville State Bank opened a branch in Avon (it already had a branch in Clayton). The bank was on US 36, at the site of the former Avon Community Building. Among the features it offered was service through a drive-up window, which was the first in the county.

Hursel C. Disney, Mrs. Bess Miller, Mrs. Crawford Taylor of Danville and Mrs. Arthur Davis of Avon were to be the employees.

List of Washington Township landowners in 1932 added

An index of the landowners in Washington Township in 1932 has been added to the Land Records section of the Hendricks County GenWeb site. This index was compiled from the Hendricks County Assessor's collection of plat books and lists the Congressional Township, Range and Section that the land was located in.

The Hendricks County Government's Archive has digital files of the plat books for scattered years between 1852 and 1940.

Adoption of Jeffrey Joseph STEWART (1969)

According to a legal notice, in October 1969 there was a petition filed by Norman E. Whitney in the Hendricks County Superior Court (case # A 69-33) to adopt Jeffrey Joseph Stewart, a minor. His biological father, Eldon Stewart, was listed as whereabouts unknown. The case was scheduled to be heard in court on November 16, 1969.

Plainfield genealogy group to discuss newspaper research

The Family History Hounds genealogy group will meet on Thursday, September 1 from 1 to 3 pm at the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library. The meeting will be held upstairs in the library's meeting rooms. Leigh Anne Johnson from the Indiana State Library will give a presentation on using newspapers in research, including how newspaper items can piece together family ties at a time when other records don't exist.

An index of the North Salem students in grades 1 through 12 in 1970 has been added to the school records section of the Hendricks County GenWeb site. This index was compiled from the North Salem High School 1970 yearbook, Echo. This yearbook is in the collection of the Danville library.

Danville to host program on Indiana court records

Beverly Jean SECHREST first baby born at Hendricks County Hospital (1962)

According to a newspaper article, Beverly Jean Sechrest (weighing 9 pounds, 7 ounces; born May 21) was the first baby born at the newly-opened Hendricks County Hospital in Danville. Her mother was Mary E. Sechrest, of Rural Route 2, Indianapolis (near Plainfield).

Name change of Marie Jo WINSON (1960)

According to a legal notice, in June 1960, Marie Jo Winson was petitioning the Hendricks County Circuit Court (case # 7686) to change her name to Marie Jo DeLand. The petition was to be heard in court on August 6, 1960.

James Clayton SPEAR sues for loss of eye (1953)

YOUTH ASKS $15,000 FOR LOSS OF ONE EYE
A rye beard which destroyed the sight of his eye is the basis of a suit for $15,000 filed Friday in circuit court by James Clayton Spear, age 19, against Eugene Mitchell, Cleo Worrell, and Lester Worrell. Since the plaintiff is under age, the suit was filed by his father, Herman Spear.

According to the complaint, the defendants operate a grain threshing business. It is alleged that young Spears, who lives south of North Salem, was employed by the defendants on July 1, 1953, and was threshing grain on the Everett Hardwick farm, 5 miles northwest of Danville, when a rye beard got in his eye.

The complaint avers that it was necessary to remove the injured eye and install an artificial eye.

The suit charges that the defendants failed to comply with the state Workmen's Compensation Act and did not carry insurance on their employees.

NOTE: According to Hendricks County Circuit Court order book 103 (18 September 1954 - 15 October 1955), on September 28, 1954, in case #19454 (James Clayton Spear b/n/f Herman Spear vs. Eugene Mitchell, Cleo Worrell & Lester Worrell), the jury found for the defendants. The plaintiff was ordered to pay for the court costs.

Adoption of Mandleen COLEMAN (1925)

According to a public notice, in October 1925, Charles Warfield Haskins and Mandleen Warfield Haskins were petitioning the Hendricks County Circuit Court to adopt Mandleen Coleman, age 12. The public notice was to inform Luther Coleman, the child's father, of their intent. He was stated to not be a resident of Indiana and had "deserted said minor child several years ago."
