New Ross - Dr. Oscar Clyde Shockley, 68 year old veterinarian in this community for many years died Sunday in Robert Long Hospital, Indianapolis. He had been seriously ill since last Wednesday and hospitalized since Thursday. Dr. Shockley was a 1917 graduate of Indiana Veterinarian College and served in the US Army during WWI. He was a member of the New Ross Christian Church, Danville Masonic Lodge, Crawfordsville Knights Templar, Indianapolis Shrine, Sixth District Veterinarian Association and National Veterinarian Association. He also was past president of Indiana Veterinarian Association. He was born April 13, 1894 in Hendricks County a son of Alfred and Eldora Clark Shockley. He was twice married. He first married Geraldine Ann Leak May 1, 1915 at Danville. She died June 23, 1955. On March 2, 1957 he married Ruhama Dean at North Salem. Survivors include his wife, two sons, Quentin of Indianapolis and Oscar, Jr of Rockville; a brother, Herbert of Pittsboro; sister, Mrs. Lida Shook of San Antonio and 3 grandchildren. Body was taken to the Walker Funeral Home, Jamestown where funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday. Interment will be in the K of P cemetery at Lizton.

Marilyn Shuck (marilyn.shuck@yahoo.com) of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee is trying to trace her great-grandparents, J.G. and Eliza Adams of Hendricks County, who also lived in Tipton County, Indiana (they are buried in Groomsville). Her grandparents were John Ramseyer Adams and Dora Belle Townsend Adams and David Edward Shuck and Goldie Ethel Adams Shuck, all of Tipton County. Her parents were Dr. Merlin Eugene Shuck (veterinarian) and Marietta Williams Shuck. Please contact her if you have any information about the Hendricks County part of her ancestry.

This voters list was compiled from photocopies found in the collection of the Plainfield Public Library and it is from an election that was held October 21, 1847 in Danville to elect a Justice of the Peace for Center Township.

Plainfield Library To Host Work Session for Probate Records
If you are interested in historic Hendricks County records, you are invited to stop by the Plainfield Public Library (1120 Stafford Rd., Plainfield IN 46168) on Saturday, October 13, 2012 any time from 10 am to 4 pm to help unfold and organize the contents of Hendricks County probate records from the 1800's. This work session is part of the Indiana Genealogical Society's ongoing project to preserve and digitize the contents of Hendricks County probate packets, which are stored in the basement of the Hendricks County courthouse in Danville.
At this work session, you will be unfolding the documents and then placing them in folders. You can stop by at any time during the day and stay for as little or as long as you want. Bring a lunch with you or go out for lunch at one of the many area restaurants.
Since this project began in 2009, over 2,500 of the probate records have been worked on, and over 600 of them are available online as digitized files.

Clayton dry goods business letterhead (1875)
The Indiana Genealogical Society has been working on preserving and digitizing the contents of Hendricks County probate packets as part of its Records Preservation Project. Among the items they've found: letterhead from 1875 (shown below) containing a receipt from the dry goods business of John Harrison, which was located at the corner of Kentucky Street and Iowa Street in Clayton.

(including Amos Elmore, who signed the receipt).

Hendricks County Government Archives Adds School Enrollment Records
Hendricks County Government's Archives has added to its digital collection of school records. They recently added scanned copies of ledger books containing school enrollment records for the 1927-1928 school year for 10 of the 12 townships (Eel River Township and Guilford Township were not included).

Plainfield Library Adds Hendricks County Coroner Inquest Records
The Indiana Room at the Plainfield Public Library has posted a new online index of some Hendricks County Coroner's Inquests. The packets were part of a collection that was in the library's historical collection, and just recently unfolded and flattened to help preserve them longer. Names, dates, and causes of death are included in the index, but the inquest reports themselves are rich with additional information. You can find this new index at:
