JESSE JOHNSON, OF INDIANAPOLIS, DIES
Former Albion School Head To Be Buried on Friday; Once County Surveyor

INDIANAPOLIS, May 27 - Jesse Paul Johnson, aged 49, former president and owner of the J. P. Johnson Company, road contractors, died of a cerebral hemorrhage here Wednesday. He was born in Michigan City August 19, 1887.

At one time he was school superintendent at Albion and was County Surveyor in Hendricks County seven years.

Funeral services will be held here Friday with burial at Plainfield.

Free genealogy workshop on DNA testing to be held in Indianapolis

The Central Indiana DNA Interest Group (CIDIG) will hold a free workshop, "DNA Testing for the Genealogist," on Saturday, June 10 from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis. There will be sessions on:

• Adding DNA to Your Genealogy Toolkit - Ann Raymont
• Getting the Most from Your Ancestry DNA Matches – Andrea Ackermann
• Y DNA & mtDNA Testing with Family Tree DNA – Denise Anderson-Decina

Members of CIDIG will be available throughout to answer questions, including: the types of DNA tests available, the DNA testing companies, who to test, understanding test results, ethnicity reports and contacting DNA matches.

Name change of Shannon Rae HART (1983)

According to a legal notice, in March 1983 Tanya Jean Bradley filed a petition in the Hendricks County Circuit Court (case # C 3 83-134) to change the name of her minor daughter, Shannon Rae Hart, to Shannon Rae Bradley. Her biological father, Gary Edward Hart of Indianapolis, consented to the petition. The petition was scheduled to be heard in court on June 8, 1983.

Indianapolis groups sponsoring research trip to Fort Wayne

The Indiana African American Genealogy Group and the Genealogical Society of Marion County are planning a research trip from Indianapolis to the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne on Saturday, November 7, 2015. The bus will leave Indianapolis at 7:30 am and it should return to Indianapolis by 8 pm. The Genealogy Center of the Allen County Public Library is the third largest genealogy repository in the United States. The Genealogy Center has more than 350,000 printed volumes, 513,000 microfilms and microfiche.

The bus trip will cost $30 per person. Registration and payment can be made on the GSMC website (www.GenealogyIndy.org) using PayPal or by mailing a check to:

Each registration should include the passenger’s name, address, telephone (preferably cell phone) and e-mail address. They will need a minimum of 25 passengers for the trip to take place. If we have fewer than 25 reservations, the bus trip will be cancelled and they will carpool instead.

Plainfield genealogy group to tour Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis

Plainfield library's Family History Hounds genealogy group will meet at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis on Thursday, August 6 at 6:30 pm. A 90-minute tour will be given of some of the historic burials, ending with James Whitcomb Riley's monument.

Walking tour of Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis

The Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library is sponsoring a guided walking tour of Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis on Thursday, June 11 at 6:30 pm. The tour will cover some of the historical people that are buried there, and will include the view of the downtown skyline as seen from James Whitcomb Riley's tomb.

The tour will cover 1 mile and last approximately 90 minutes. Bottled water, comfortable shoes and insect repellant are recommended. Pre-registration is required and is limited to those age 12 and up. Participants will be responsible for their own transportation and will meet at the cemetery (you will be given directions on where to park and meet up for the walking tour). Nina SIMS receives $72,000 in alimony (1955)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 103 (September 1954 - October 1955), in July 1955 Nina Sims was granted a divorce from Frank Z. Sims (case #19724). Their case had originally been filed in Marion County Superior Court but had later been transferred to Hendricks County Circuit Court. As part of the divorce decree, Nina was to receive several items from their house at 1128 North Oakland Avenue in Indianapolis as well as their farm in Johnson County, plus the deeds to three graves they had purchased in Memorial Park Cemetery on the east side of Indianapolis. Frank was to pay her $72,407.93 in alimony, plus $10,551 for her attorney fees (he already having paid $3,500 for her attorney fees).

Janet MARIN of Indianapolis granted divorce (1948)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 97 (March 1948 - April 1949), in April 1948 Janet L. Marin was granted a divorce from Laddie Marin (case #17952). The case was originally filed in Marion County court in Indianapolis but was transferred to the Hendricks County Circuit Court. Janet was given custody of their daughter, Sharon Sue Marin (age 2 1/2) and Laddie was ordered to pay $50 a month in child support.

Marguerite HESS of Indianapolis granted divorce (1948)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 97 (March 1948 - April 1949), in March 1948 Marguerite Hess was granted a divorce from Herman Hess (case #17922). The case was originally filed in Marion County court in Indianapolis but was transferred to the Hendricks County Circuit Court. The divorce decree noted that they were married on 19 March 1927 and had lived together until 1 June 1937, and had children Martha Hess and Doris Hess. Marguerite was given custody of the 2 children and Herman was ordered to pay $85 a month in child support.

Alice BENJAMIN of Indianapolis granted divorce (1947)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 96 (February 1947 - March 1948), in September 1947 Alice A. Benjamin was granted a divorce from Frank P. Benjamin (case #17794). The case was originally filed in Marion County court in Indianapolis but was transferred to the Hendricks County Circuit Court. The divorce decree noted that they were married on 12 April 1937 and had lived together until 2 January 1947, and had children Marilyn Rose Benjamin (age 9) and Donna Elaine Benjamin (age 4). Alice was given custody of the 2 children and Frank was ordered to pay $30 a week child support.

John STOEGER Naturalized (1860)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Court of Common Pleas Order Book Volume 4 (January 1860 - May 1861), in July 1860 John Stoeger, who had filed his declaration of intent in the Marion County Circuit Court on 16 July 1855, was naturalized. Stoeger was a native of Bavaria.

Joseph J. DUNGAN of Union Township Dies (1931)

FORMERLY OF UNION DIES AT HOME AT MORRISTOWN
Joseph J. Dungan, formerly a resident of Union Township, died, Friday, at his home in Morristown. The funeral was Monday with burial at Greenwood.

He was a brother of the late James A. Dungan, of Danville, and his widow, who survives, was Miss Bessie A. Halfaker, of Pittsboro. They were married December 16, 1886. Four daughters and four sons survive. The daughters are Mrs. W.C. Deckard, of Mitchell; Mrs. E.S. Taylor, of Westville, Ohio; Mrs. Robert R. Lawson, of Indianapolis, and Mrs. C.S. Sauers, of Greenwich, Ohio. The sons are Dr. G.H. Dungan, of Urbana, Ill.; John U. Dungan, of Lockland, Ohio; James W. Dungan and Charles W.G. Dungan, of Indianapolis. A sister, Mrs. John S. Clark, of Greenwood, also survives.

Alta Marie Ware and Milton Harp, both of Indianapolis, were married at Jeffersonville, June 7. Miss Ware is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ware, living west of here. Mrs. Harp is a graduate of the local high school with the class of 1926, and she also attended Central Normal College and is a graduate from a business college in Indianapolis. Mr. Harp is employed with the Broad Ripple Auto Co. They are at home at 2722 N. Harding Street, Indianapolis.

Lucy (MARSH) BOWEN Commits Suicide (1933)

MRS. BOWEN BURIED HERE
The remains of Mrs. Lucy Bowen, age 61, of Indianapolis, were interred in the East cemetery here, yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Bowen committed suicide in her apartment in Indianapolis, Monday night, when she attached a hose to a gas jet and placed the other end in her mouth. Before committing the rash act she had mailed a letter to her sister-in-law, Mrs. Lem Trotter, at Speedway. Mrs. Trotter found the body when she forced her way into the apartment. Mrs. Bowen had been in impaired health for a number of weeks. She was the daughter of Mrs. Amanda Marsh of this place.

Lois WYSONG of Indianapolis Files For Divorce (1934)

Twenty thousand dollars alimony is asked in a divorce suit venued to the local court from Marion County, last week. Lois Wysong asks for an absolute divorce from Albert Wysong on the grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment. The couple were married in December 1930, and separated last October. They lived in Indianapolis.

OBITUARY: Anna (ALBERTSON) HOBBS of Plainfield (1934)

WIDOW OF FORMER NURSERY HEAD DIES AT PLAINFIELD
Mrs. Anna M. Hobbs, age eighty-two, widow of Cyrus May Hobbs, nationally known nurseryman, died at her home in Plainfield, Sunday morning, after a long illness.

She was born in Washington County, near Salem, and moved to Bridgeport in 1875 with her parents, Oliver and Mary Albertson, who founded the Bridgeport nurseries, now operated as C.M. Hobbs & Sons. Her marriage took place in 1876. Her husband became a partner in the nursery enterprise, and on the death of Mr. Albertson, succeeded to ownership of the business. At the time of his death, seven years ago, he was a trustee of Purdue University. Mrs. Hobbs was a birthright member of Friends church and was educated in Quaker institutions.

Surviving are one daughter, Miss Carrie M. Hobbs, Plainfield; three sons, Oliver A. Hobbs and Fred M. Hobbs, Plainfield, and Harry W. Hobbs, of Indianapolis; two brothers, Albert Albertson, Caldwell, Idaho, and Emory Albertson, Whittier, Cal.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home, the Rev. Norvel Webb officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

COPELAND/CORBIN marriage license warning (1940)

A note found in Hendricks County Marriage Application Book 21 (1939-1941) warns the Hendricks County Clerk not to issue a marriage license to William Roy Copeland and Catherine Corbin of Indianapolis, as he is underage. The note, written by William's mother, reads:

November 5, 1940
Dear Sir,

Please do not issue William Roy Copeland RR 10 Box 295 Indianapolis and Catherine ? Corbin 412 Spring St. Indianapolis a marriage license because the boy is only seventeen but could easily pass for twenty-two. Was born in Indianapolis but claims he was born either in Cincinnati or Canada.
