According to a newspaper article, in December 1960 the Hendricks County Commissioners passed an ordinance designating US 36 as "Main Street" throughout Danville. Washington Street in Danville was to be the crossroads for US 36 - all of US 36 to the west of Washington Street was to be known as "West Main Street"; all of US 36 to the east of Washington Street was to be known as "East Main Street."

The ordinance also directed the postal service to use a numbering system for houses along US 36/Main Street. The numbering system would start with the number 1000 and each one-mile section would be another 1000 consecutively. Addresses on the north side of US 36 would have even numbers.

NORTH SALEM – Donnell A. Baxter, 71, of North Salem, who worked at Madden Furniture Co. at Indianapolis 40 years, died at 1:40 a.m. today in Methodist Hospital at Indianapolis. He had been a patient there about 10 days. He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite.

He was born at Indianapolis on Jan. 14, 1903, a son of Joseph and Mae Lewis Baxter. He attended schools at Indianapolis and was married to Zella M. Russell of Greenfield on Dec. 4, 1929. She survives. Also surviving is a brother, Glenn of Indianapolis. Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Porter Funeral Home at North Salem.

Burial will be in Washington Park East at Indianapolis. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday.

NORTH SALEM – Mrs. Violet Naomi Williams, 57, died today in Hendricks County Hospital at Danville where she had been a patient since June 22. She had been employed by Allison Division of General Motors Corp. at Indianapolis, Curtis Wright at Indianapolis and the Golden Manor Nursing Home at Ladoga. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God at New Maysville. Born August 16, 1916, at North Salem, she was a daughter of Earl and Hazel Kersey Soots. She married Robert R. Leak in 1935. He died in 1970. She married Earl Williams on July 21, 1972. He survives. Other survivors include her mother, Mrs. Hazel Bonames of North Salem; a son, Robert Leak of Rt. 2, Roachdale; a daughter, Sharon Nichols of Connersville; a sister, Betty Ross of Plainfield; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two children, two sisters and a brother. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Porter Funeral Home here with the Rev. Kenneth Clark officiating. Burial will be in New Maysville Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday.

According to a newspaper article, on Saturday, September 14, 1963 a groundbreaking ceremony was held by the Mill Creek Community School Corporation (which represented Liberty Township, Clay Township and Franklin Township) for the new Cascade High School in Clayton. The building was to cost $1.5 million and when completed would serve the students from the former high schools of Clayton, Amo and Stilesville.

The site of the new school was described in the article as being on Jacktown Road (aka County Road 200 West), north of US 40.

This was part of a new nationwide postal delivery system designed to speed up delivery. The first digit of a 5-digit zip code identified the geographical area, the second and third digits identified the major city or sectional center, and the fourth and fifth digits identified the delivery unit.

Unmarked graves to be moved from Hendricks County Home (1981)

According to a newspaper article, in October 1981 the Hendricks County Commissioners gave permission to the State Highway Department to move 80 to 85 unmarked graves that had been discovered at the Hendricks County Home in Danville. The graves, most of which had no identification, had been found outside of the county home's graveyard area, and the remains were to be relocated to South Cemetery in Danville. This discovery came as the Highway Department was expanding US 36 to 4 lanes and moving the path of the highway as it went through Danville.

Plainfield opens new post office (1958)

According to a newspaper article, Plainfield's new post office was to be dedicated on Saturday, September 13. The new building was at 164 North Mill Street (near the intersection of Park Drive) and was being leased from Thomas E. Ellis and Wanda J. Ellis. The article provided some statistics about the growth of Plainfield's postal service:

• In 1948 they did $12,927.69 in business; in 1957 they did $59.686.02.
• In 1958 they have 14 employees; in 1948 they had 7 employees; in 1938 they had 4 employees.
• In 1938 there were 2 postal routes; in 1958 there are 5 postal routes.
• In 1938 there were 4 collection boxes; in 1958 there are 17 collection boxes.
• In 1948 they sold 250,067 stamps; in 1957 they sold 1,101,294 stamps.

NOTE: Today Plainfield's post office is at 700 North Carr Road (aka County Road 750 East).

Name change of Mary Ruth TESCHENDORF (1982)
