Hendricks County estate index updated for 1985

An index of the Hendricks County estate cases that had legal notices published in Hendricks County newspapers has been updated to include notices from the Danville Gazette and The Republican for 1985. This index is in the probate records section of the Hendricks County GenWeb site.

This index now includes these Hendricks County newspapers:

The Brownsburg Branches genealogy group will meet on Tuesday, May 2 from 1 to 3 pm at the Brownsburg Public Library. The meeting will be held in Meeting Room E. Meredith Thompson from the Hendricks County GenWeb Project and the Indiana Genealogical Society will present a program on divorce records.

According to a legal notice, in November 1984 Laura Joyce Wathen filed a petition in the Hendricks County Circuit Court (case # C 11 84-328) to change the names of her minor children, Richard Melvin Castiglione, Jr. and Anthony Wayne Castiglione, to Richard Dean Wathen and Anthony Wayne Wathen, respectively. These children were from her former marriage to Richard Melvin Castiglione, which had ended in divorce on June 8, 1878 (Hendricks County Superior Court case # S 77-311). She married Thomas L. Wathen on April 4, 1981, and they had a child together, Scott Robert Wathen. The petition was scheduled to be heard in court 30 days after the publication of the notice.

US 36 in Avon widened to 4 lanes (1976)

According to a newspaper article, on October 28, 1976, US 36 between Avon and Interstate 465 officially opened as a 4-lane highway. Ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held at the Hendricks County-Marion County line, presided over by Governor Otis Bowen. Construction had begun in 1975 to widen this stretch of road from 2 lanes to 4 lanes, with an $8.6 million contract awarded to Rieth-Riley Construction Co.


The portion of US 36 between Danville and Avon remained 2 lanes until 1985, when it was widened to 4 lanes (source: October 1985 newspaper issues).

Kroger opens store on east side of Danville (1975)

According to a newspaper article, on April 1, 1975, Kroger opened a super store in the Old Farm Shopping Center on the east edge of Danville (today this shopping center is at the intersection of Old Farm Road and Old US 36). It was touted as being the largest store in Hendricks County.

Kroger opens new store across from Danville park (1962)

According to a newspaper article, in June 1962 Kroger began construction on a new store on the south side of US 36, across from the Danville Park. The contract was for $87,900 and the new store was to be over 10,000 square feet, with a music system and complete sprinkler system.

According to a October 4, 1962 newspaper article, the new store held its grand opening that week. Its address was 555 East Main Street.

NOTE: This store replaced the Kroger that was on the west side of the courthouse square (South Jefferson Street). The Danville State Bank bought the South Jefferson Street property from Kroger.

Name change of Charles Robert WILLIAMS, II and Troy Allen WILLIAMS (1983)

According to a legal notice, in July 1983 Charles Robert Williams, II and Troy Allen Williams filed a petition in the Hendricks County Circuit Court (case # C 7 83-248) to change their names to Chad Michael Carroll and Troy Allen Carroll, respectively. Because they were under the age of 21, the petition was filed on their behalf by Vickie L. Carroll. The petition was scheduled to be heard in court on September 9, 1983.








Pittsboro opens post office (1962)

According to a newspaper article, on Sunday, May 27, 1962, a dedication ceremony was held for the Pittsboro post office. According to an August 11, 1960 article, bids were being taken for the new post office, which was to be on the south side of US 136/Main Street, between Maple Street and Meridian Street. The postal service was said to be aiming for an "ultimate goal" of next-day delivery of mail anywhere in the country.

NOTE: The address of this post office today is 29 West Main Street.

Danville school board purchases & demolishes Primitive Baptist Church (1985)

According to a newspaper article, in December 1985 the Danville school board reached an agreement to purchase the former Primitive Baptist Church that was next to the Danville Junior High (at the intersection of US 36 and North Wayne Street) for $11,500 and to spend another $4,800 demolishing it.

NOTE: Today the former Danville Junior High is now the site of Danville Town Hall, and the site of the former Primitive Baptist Church is a parking lot adjacent to the town hall.

Hendricks County votes on consolidating school districts (1962)

According to a newspaper article, in the primary held in May 1962, Hendricks County voters had rejected a referendum to consolidate the schools in 5 townships - Center Township, Marion Township, Eel River Township, Middle Township and Union Townships - into one corporation, called the Northwest Community School Corporation.

A new referendum was put on the ballot for the general election in November 1962. It would consolidate the schools in Center Township and Marion Township into one corporation to be called the Danville Community School Corporation. According to a November 8, 1962 article, this referendum passed.

There was another referendum on the ballot that would consolidate the schools in Eel River Township, Union Township and Middle Township into one corporation to be called the North Hendricks Community School Corporation. According to a November 8, 1962 article, this referendum failed.






Cable television service offered in Danville (1983)

According to an ad in a newspaper, the first cable television services were offered in Danville in 1983. Wabash Cablevision had a full-page ad offering access to 19 cable television channels for $9.40 a month. The channels included Nickelodeon and Superstation TBS of Atlanta, as well as The Nashville Network and WGN Chicago.

Kingsway Christian Church in Avon celebrates 10th anniversary (1983)

According to a newspaper article, in September 1983 Kingsway Christian Church in Avon (at the southwest corner of Dan Jones Road and County Road 100 North) was celebrating its 10th anniversary. The congregation began in September 1973 in the gymnasium of the Avon High School with 26 members; as of 1983, it had over 1,000 members. It also had gone through 4 building projects, including building a Christian school which went from pre-school through 7th grade.

Avon railroad yard named "Big Four" (1960)

According to a newspaper article, in August 1960, the New York Central Railroad announced they were naming their new freight yard in Avon as "The Big Four Yard." The name was a tribute to the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway Co. (known as "The Big Four"), which had provided train service throughout Indiana, Ohio and Illinois since the 1800's. On February 1, 1930, The Big Four had been absorbed by the New York Central Railroad.

The new freight yard in Avon was to be formally opened on September 15, 1960.




Danville newspaper to become part of Brownsburg publisher

According to a newspaper article, the Danville Gazette announced that effective with their April 20, 1983 issue, they would be owned by Mid-States Newspapers, Inc. of Brownsburg, which published The Guide. The Gazette would remain a separate newspaper, but would focus on news about Avon and Danville.

Hendricks County Hospital completes an addition (1983)

According to a newspaper article, in March 1983, the Hendricks County Hospital in Danville completed an 44,000 square foot addition, the first phase in a construction and renovation project that began in August 1981 (the second phase was to be finished in December 1983).

Death of Jean (SHEFHIRE) SCOTT (1974)

Jean Scott, 55, of Danville, a former registered nurse at Culver Hospital, died Tuesday in Methodist Hospital at Indianapolis. Mrs. Scott also worked as a registered nurse at Methodist Hospital and Indiana University Medical Center at Indianapolis. She was on the nursing staff in Hendricks County Hospital at Danville at the time of her death. She served in the Army Nurse Corps in England and France during World War II. She was a graduate of Ladoga High School and Methodist Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Scott was born October 1, 1918, at Ladoga, a daughter of Orb M. and Charlotte Barnes Shefhire. Surviving are five sons, Sidney of Crawfordsville, Dannell of Peru, Michael of Indianapolis and Kevin and Walt, at home; three brothers, Wendall and Keith Shefhire of Indianapolis, and Wayne Shefhire of Washington and a sister, Mrs. Letty Todd of Ladoga. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Perkins Funeral Home at Ladoga with burial in Ladoga Cemetery. Friends may call between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday.

Name change of Erik Todd JENSEN (1983)

According to a legal notice, in August 1983 Kristine K. (Jensen) Quandt filed a petition in the Hendricks County Circuit Court (case # C 8 83-277) to change the name of her minor son, Erik Todd Jensen, to Erik Todd Quandt. The petition was scheduled to be heard in court on October 7, 1983.








Hendricks County petitions to add a Superior Court (1962)

According to a newspaper article, in September 1962, members of the Hendricks County Bar Association were lobbying the Indiana legislature to pass a bill establishing a Superior Court in Hendricks County, to take some of the burden off of the Hendricks County Circuit Court. The Circuit Court was said to be several months behind on its docket due to the heavy caseload. The proposed Superior Court would have exclusive jurisdiction in hearing probate cases (including estates and various kinds of guardianships) as well as trusts, adoptions, and surviving partnerships. It would have concurrent jurisdiction with the Circuit Court when it came to hearing civil cases, divorce cases and criminal cases. The Superior Court would not have any jurisdiction for juvenile cases.

NOTE: In March 1963, the Indiana General Assembly did approve the creation of a Hendricks County Superior Court (Acts of 1963, Chapter 247), which took effect on August 1, 1963. On that date, half of the existing caseload for the Hendricks County Circuit Court was assigned to the Hendricks County Superior Court.






Hendricks County Senior Center opens in Danville (1983)

According to a newspaper article, the Hendricks County Senior Center was to open on March 7, 1983 at 960 East Main Street in Danville. It was a United Way Agency offering on-site activities as well as shuttle service to the senior center from most parts of the county. It also would provide hot lunches each day to those age 60 and older, thanks to funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
