Work Session for Hendricks County Probate Records

Saturday, April 26 at Danville Public Library is the next scheduled work session for Hendricks County probate records - stop by anytime from 10 am to 4 pm to help unfold and organize some of Hendricks County's probate packets from the 1800's. Lunch is on your own, with a variety of eating options in the area.

This is part of the Indiana Genealogical Society's ongoing project to preserve and digitize these court records, which date back to the founding of the county in 1824. These probate packets include estates and guardianships. The receipts and other original papers in them give fascinating details of what life was like back then.

An index to a Hendricks County guardianship bonds book which covers 1904 to 1921 has been added to the Hendricks County GenWeb site. The index includes the name of the ward, as well as the name of their guardian and the year that the bond was issued in the case.

Guardianship records are part of probate records, and additional information can be found in probate order books as well as probate "loose papers".

The Indiana Genealogical Society has added 59 more digitized files of Hendricks County probate records to their website. The newest files cover these surnames:

Hendricks County obituary index updated

Entries from 2013 have been added to the database Deaths from The Republican's Year in Review, which is on the Hendricks County GenWeb site. The Republican is a weekly newspaper published in Danville, Indiana. Once a year it publishes a special "Year in Review" issue, which includes a listing of the deaths that were mentioned in each issue of that year.

This database includes the person's name and the issue of the newspaper their obituary appeared in. It now covers 1892-2013.

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 52 (March 1907 - February 1908), in March 1907 Maggie Vandagriff was granted a divorce from Edward G. Vandagriff (case #7836). The court ruled that at the time of their marriage, Edward had another legal wife, from whom he had not been divorced.

Jennie was also given custody of their children - Lillie Smith, Pearl Smith, May Smith, Bernice Smith, Eddie Smith, Earl Smith and Cecil Smith - and Henry was ordered to pay $20 a month for child support.

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 52 (March 1907 - February 1908), in October 1907 Sadie C. Pope was granted a divorce from James H. Pope (case #7944). Sadie was also given custody of their children - Urban J.N. Pope and Ellen Elizabeth Pope - and James was ordered to pay $10 a month in child support.

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 52 (March 1907 - February 1908), Ellis Sawyer (case #4433) had been committed to the Indiana State Reformatory in Jeffersonville on November 7, 1904 and paroled on July 20, 1906. In August 1907, he was fully discharged.

Viola (GORMAN) ISENHOWER granted divorce (1907)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 52 (March 1907 - February 1908), in October 1907 Viola E. Isenhower was granted a divorce from Earl E. Isenhower (case #7929). The court ruled that Earl had failed to provide support for more than 2 years and had treated Viola cruelly. She was also allowed to change her name back to her maiden name, Viola A. Gorman.

William had been served with the divorce papers in Pike County, Indiana but had failed to appear in court. Anna was also given custody of their daughter, Carrie H. Berlin.

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 52 (March 1907 - February 1908), in November 1907 John A. Hamilton (age 39) pled guilty to the crime of grand larceny (case #4671). He was fined $5 and sentenced to the Indiana State Prison for a term of 1 to 14 years.

Lenora CRANE granted divorce (1908)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 52 (March 1907 - February 1908), in February 1908 Lenora A. Crane was granted a divorce from Thomas W. Crane (case #8021). Thomas had been served with papers in Floyd County, Georgia. The court found that Thomas had abandoned his wife and 3 children (Ruby Crane, age 14; Claude Crane, age 13; Mary Crane, age 9) without cause back in 1901. Lenora was awarded custody of the children, as well as $3,000 in alimony.

Roy and Carl RUNION sentenced to Indiana Boys' School (1906)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 51 (March 1906 - February 1907), in February 1907 Bessie Masten was granted a divorce from Carl S. Masten (case #7826). Carl was given custody of their daughter, Mabel Masten, with Bessie allowed to visit the child not more than 1/2 of the time during the year.

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 51 (March 1906 - February 1907), in September 1906 Cora B. Figg was granted a divorce from Archibald A. Figg (case #7768). Cora's name was also changed to her maiden name, Cora B. Vice.

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 51 (March 1906 - February 1907), in December 1906 Mary Yeates was granted a divorce from Thomas J. Yeates (case #7797). Mary was also given custody of their daughter, Ida Yeates. Should Mary ever remarry, the judge left open the possibility of revisiting the custody question.

Mattie PERSLEY granted divorce (1906)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 51 (March 1906 - February 1907), in October 1906 Mattie Persley was granted a divorce from Benjamin Persley (case #7769). Benjamin had been served with the divorce papers in Floyd County, Indiana but failed to appear in court. Mattie was also given custody of their children: George Persley (age 5), Thomas Persley (age 3) and Theodore Persley (age 1).

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 51 (March 1906 - February 1907), in September 1906 Florence Logston was granted a divorce from William Logston (case #7752). Florence was also given $500 in alimony and custody of their daughter Edna Logston, with William ordered to pay $3 a week in child support.

Edward VANDAGRIFF convicted of bigamy (1907)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 51 (March 1906 - February 1907), in January 1907 Edward G. Vandagriff (age 35) pled guilty to the crime of bigamy (case #4622). He was sentenced to Indiana State Prison for a term of 2 to 5 years.

Minnie BUNTING granted divorce (1906)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 51 (March 1906 - February 1907), in April 1906 Minnie Bunting was granted a divorce from George W. Bunting (case #7676). Minnie was given custody of their son George Bunting (age 13) and George W. was ordered to pay $5 a week in child support.

Incorporation of town of Amo legalized (1915)

In March 1915 the Indiana General Assembly passed a law (House Bill 333) legalizing the incorporation of the town of Amo in Hendricks County. The election of town officials was also rendered valid.

An index of graduates of New Winchester High School from 1909 to 1963 has been added to the Hendricks County GenWeb site. This listing was extracted from a booklet, History of Schools of Marion Township, Hendricks County, Indiana, which was published by the Alumni Association of New Winchester High School in 1970.

1909 was the first year the high school was in existence; it closed in 1963, as part of the consolidation of schools in the county. Students from the New Winchester area were transferred to Danville High School.

According to civil court docket books of the Hendricks County Circuit Court, on October 29, 1924 Belle M. Robinson filed for divorce from Raymond M. Robinson (case #11662). On October 7, 1930, the court on its own motion dismissed the case for want of prosecution, and the case was stricken from the docket at no cost to the plaintiff.
