According to a legal notice, in October 1962 there was a petition filed by Larry R. Schmidt in the Hendricks County Circuit Court (case # 62-22) to adopt Florence Elizabeth Rice and Ellen Isabel Rice, minor children. Their biological father, Thomas E. Rice, Jr., was listed as whereabouts unknown. The case was scheduled to be heard in court on October 26, 1962.
