NOTE: Hendricks County marriage records show that the marriage of Judy Carol Newlin and Larry Dean White occurred on 6 September 1962, where she listed her age as 19 (birthdate August 27, 1943). On 8 August 1964, she married Richard Melvin Castiglione, having gotten a waiver of the 3-day waiting period. On the 1964 marriage application, she listed her age as 17 (birthdate as August 27, 1947). She included an affidavit from her parents consenting to the marriage.

Indianapolis groups sponsoring research trip to Fort Wayne

The Indiana African American Genealogy Group and the Genealogical Society of Marion County are planning a research trip from Indianapolis to the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne on Saturday, November 7, 2015. The bus will leave Indianapolis at 7:30 am and it should return to Indianapolis by 8 pm. The Genealogy Center of the Allen County Public Library is the third largest genealogy repository in the United States. The Genealogy Center has more than 350,000 printed volumes, 513,000 microfilms and microfiche.

THORNTOWN – Winifred S. Peery, 69, of Rt. 1, Thorntown, died at 4:45 a.m. Sunday at Witham Memorial Hospital at Lebanon where she had been a patient one week. Mrs. Peery was a member of the Sugar Plains Friends Church where she was active in many church affairs. For several years she was secretary of Literature of the National Friends Missionary Society. She was a graduate of West Newton High School and had attended Danville Normal Teachers College. She was a Hendricks County native, born Feb. 25, 1899, a daughter of Orlando and Margaret (Keeney) Schenck. She married Hershel C. Peery Aug. 15, 1922, at West Newton. Surviving are her husband; a daughter Mrs. Robert Gwin of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two sons, Lawrence of Rt. 1, Thorntown and Mark of Elverson, Pa.; two sisters, Mrs. Walter Barnett and Mrs. Hubert Westerfield, both of West Newton, and 18 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sugar Plains Church with Rev. Lorton Heusel and Rev. Charles Adams officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Plains Cemetery. Friends may call at Russell and Hitch Funeral Home here after 7 p.m. today.

Ida LOGSTON gives birth to illegitimate child (1881)

As mentioned in Hendricks County probate records, in 1881 Ida Logston had filed a bastardy suit against Douglas Hall in Hendricks County Circuit Court, alleging he was the father of her illegitimate child Grace Logston. In September 1881, Douglas Hall (with Thomas B. Hall, witness) agreed to pay Grace's guardian, John W. Tinder, $250 (payable in 5 annual installments of $50, beginning in December 1881 and ending in December 1885) for the care of the child. In exchange, the bastardy suit against Douglas Hall would be dismissed.

Adoption of John A. (KENSELL) SOLOMON (1920)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Probate Order Book 42 (September 1919 - June 1920), in May 1920 Charles P. and Bertha M. Solomon filed a petition (case #3386) to adopt John A. Kensell, who was 12 years old and was born February 6, 1908. On October 6, 1911, he had been made a ward of the Board of Children's Guardians in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana (case #25280) - his father had abandoned him and his mother had signed over custody of him to the board. Kensell had subsequently been placed with Charles P. and Bertha M. Solomon. The petition was granted and the child's name was changed to John A. Solomon.

As mentioned in Hendricks County Probate Order Book 41 (December 1918 - September 1919), in March 1919 Harry E. and Minnie L. Tharp of Brownsburg filed a petition (case #3331) to adopt Adelpha Harding, who was 12 or 13 years old. On March 7, 1919, Miami County's Juvenile Court had declared Adelpha to be a neglected child, and she had been a ward of the Board of Children's Guardians there. The board consented to the adoption, and her name was changed to Adelpha Tharp.

Adoption of Zelma L. PLATT (HARWOOD) (1919)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Probate Order Book 41 (December 1918 - September 1919), in March 1919 Julia F. Harwood filed a petition to adopt Zelma L. Platt, who was 20 years old. Zelma's mother was dead and her father, Oliver D. Platt, was living in Shelby County, Indiana and gave his consent to the adoption. The petition was granted and her name was changed to Zelma L. Harwood.

As mentioned in Hendricks County Probate Order Book 40 (March 1918 - December 1918), in November 1918 Alfred L. and Anna Walters filed a petition (case #3053) to adopt Katherine May Davenport, who was born May 1, 1905 near Spencer, Owen County, Indiana. Her parents' names were unknown and they were believed to be dead. On March 1, 1913, she had been sent by Owen County authorities to the Indianapolis Orphans' Home, where she lived for 1 month before the Walters brought her to their home in Danville, where she had been living ever since. The petition was granted, and her name was changed to Katherine May Walters.

Parkhurst filed a petition (case #3327) to adopt Elenore Schnell, who was born December 10, 1917. She had been declared a neglected child on January 2, 1918 in Marion County's Juvenile Court and given into the custody of the Board of Children's Guardians. The Parkhursts had been given custody of her by the Board of Children's Guardians on March 15, 1918. Their petition for adoption was granted, and her name was changed to Mary Louise Parkhurst.

Probate complete books index 1826-1905 added

An index of the Hendricks County probate complete books, which date from 1826 through 1905, has been added to the Hendricks County GenWeb site. The administrator, executor or guardian in a probate case had the option to have the clerk write a complete summary of the case from beginning to end, which was then recorded in the probate complete book.

Because having it recorded in the probate complete book was not a requirement, and it involved paying the clerk an additional fee, most probate cases do not appear in the probate complete books. This option began to be phased out in Indiana beginning in the 1880's, and Hendricks County's probate complete books ended entirely in 1905.

All of Hendricks County's probate complete books have been microfilmed. That microfilm is available locally at the Plainfield Public Library, as well as at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis and by ordering through the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Hendricks County government has digitized many of these probate complete books, and the digital copies are available through the Archives section of their website.

Sallee filed a petition (case #3350) to adopt Mary Constance Elmore, who was 2 years old and had no legal father. Her mother (who was not named) was Charles' wife and consented to the adoption. The petition was granted and the child's name was changed to Mary Constance Sallee.

Adoption of Ora Olena HICKS (1919)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Probate Order Book 41 (December 1918 - September 1919), in May 1919 John Quincy Hicks and Ora Olena Hicks, who were living near Plainfield, filed a petition to adopt a toddler, also named Ora Olena Hicks. The child was born on December 6, 1917, the illegitimate daughter of Ivel F. Riggs, who had been living with the Hicks family. Riggs gave her consent for the adoption, and the petition was granted, with the child's name remaining the same as it was before.

Photo of Pittsboro grammar school students early 1900's

This postcard photo was recently purchased on eBay and has been donated to the Archives of the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library. It is identified on the front as being of the Pittsboro grammar school, with Mr. O. Reynolds, teacher. Research has found that Oscar Reynolds was a teacher in Pittsboro schools from 1898 through about 1920 - based on the clothing, this photo was probably taken in the early 1900's.

The Indiana Boys' School was a state correctional institution established in Plainfield in 1867 to reform male juvenile offenders through education and job training. The records of the institution are held by the Indiana State Archives - see their database of inmates from 1867 through 1937.

An index to the parents listed in Hendricks County's marriage application books (1905-1950) has been added to the Hendricks County GenWeb site. This index is helpful when trying to find siblings, particularly women, whose last names may have changed. It includes the parent's name, the name of their child (the marriage applicant), the date of the child's marriage application and the volume and page numbers.

ABOUT THE MARRIAGE APPLICATION BOOKS: Beginning in May 1905, Indiana law required the recording of marriage applications, which included biographical details about the bride and the groom, as well as their parents. In Hendricks County, the information from these applications was kept in a separate set of books from the marriage record from May 1905 until June 1950. Then beginning in June 1950, the application information was recorded in the same set of books as the marriage record.

The Hendricks County Government's Archive has digital files of all 28 volumes of the marriage application books (1905-1950).

Plainfield library digitizes Indiana Boys' School newspapers

As part of a grant from the Indiana State Library, the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library has begun digitizing its microfilm collection of newspapers from the Indiana Boys' School from the 1930's. The newspaper, called the Indiana Boys' School Herald, was produced by the boys themselves, and included news about the boys as well as the employees (many of whom were Hendricks County residents). The digital images and transcriptions of the articles are hosted at Indiana Memory, the Indiana State Library's repository for digital collections from across the state.

The Indiana Boys' School was a state correctional institution established in Plainfield in 1867 to reform male juvenile offenders through education and job training. The records of the institution are held by the Indiana State Archives - see their database of inmates from 1867 through 1937.

Walking tour of Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis

The Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library is sponsoring a guided walking tour of Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis on Thursday, June 11 at 6:30 pm. The tour will cover some of the historical people that are buried there, and will include the view of the downtown skyline as seen from James Whitcomb Riley's tomb.

The tour will cover 1 mile and last approximately 90 minutes. Bottled water, comfortable shoes and insect repellant are recommended. Pre-registration is required and is limited to those age 12 and up. Participants will be responsible for their own transportation and will meet at the cemetery (you will be given directions on where to park and meet up for the walking tour). Fred Anson WAMPLER appointed railroad policeman (1925)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 74 (September 1924 - October 1925), the court minutes for July 14, 1925 record that Fred Anson Wampler was commissioned by the governor for a 3-year term as a policeman for the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad. This commission was also filed in Vigo County Circuit Court in Terre Haute.

A new genealogy interest group, called Family History Hounds, has formed and will be meeting at the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library the 1st Thursday of every month from 1 pm to 3 pm. The first meeting will be held on Thursday, May 7 from 1 to 3 pm in the library's Indiana Room. John and Grace PRICE adopt Naomi BLUNK (1918)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Commissioners Book Volume 22 (1917-1923), the minutes of the board of commissioners' meeting for Saturday, December 28, 1918 record that John C. Price and Grace C. Price presented a petition to adopt Naomi Blunk, a ward of Hendricks County. The commissioners gave their consent.

Hendricks County marriage applications index 1946-1947 added

An index to Hendricks County Marriage Applications Book 26 (which covers 25 October 1946 through 17 December 1947) has been added to the Hendricks County GenWeb site. The index is in progress - so far it covers 1905 through 1947.

ABOUT THESE RECORDS: Beginning in May 1905, Indiana law required the recording of marriage applications, which included biographical details about the bride and the groom, as well as their parents. In Hendricks County, the information from these applications was kept in a separate set of books from the marriage record from May 1905 until June 1950.

The Hendricks County Government's Archive has digital files of all of the marriage application books.

Obituary for Minnie Ann (COGSWELL) DELANEY died 1977

NORTH SALEM – Minnie Ann Delaney, 89, of North Salem, died Sunday in Danville Nursing Home. Mrs. Delaney had been a patient there for several years. She was retired from the North Salem school system where she had been employed as a cook. Mrs. Delaney was a member of the North Salem Christian Church. Born November 17, 1887, in Elizaville, she was the daughter of Stacy and Nancy Ann Robinson Cogswell. She married William Delaney in 1905. He preceded her in death. She is survived by a son, William of Indianapolis; three daughters, Bessie Myers of North Salem and Bernice and Mary Gasper both of Fort Wayne; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Porter Funeral Home at North Salem with the Rev. Earl Davis officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at North Salem. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today.

Memorial for George T. PATTISON (1926)

As mentioned in Hendricks County Circuit Court Civil Order Book Volume 75 (October 1925 - October 1926), the death of George T. Pattison on December 31, 1925 led the Hendricks County Bar to issue this memorial about him in the circuit court minutes of January 5, 1926:

"George T. Pattison, who for almost forty years was a member of this bar, passed away at his home in Danville, December 31st, 1925, at the age of 68 years. He was born in Henry County, Indiana. He attended the public schools and the Normal School at Lebanon, Ohio, and taught for a few years. He came to Hendricks County about the year of 1883 and entered the Central Normal College as a student. Two years later he graduated from that institution and became a member of the faculty, having charge of the business department of the school. For a time he read law in the office of the late Judge John V. Hadley. He was married to Jennie Downard, in 1886. She with one son and two daughters survive him. He retired from his position as instructor and gave all his time to his chosen profession. He was for a time a partner of John W. Trotter in abstracting and law, the firm name being Trotter & Pattison. Some time after the dissolution of that partnership he was a member of the firm of Enloe & Pattison.

He was a reliable and conscientious attorney and an exemplary citizen in all walks of life. He was greatly attached to his home and was a model husband and father. He was during all his residence in this county a faithful and constant member of the Methodist Church, and for many years a member of the Official Board of that institution. He served as a Director of the Central Normal College from the date of its incorporation and rendered valuable service in that capacity. For many years he was a member of the Order of Odd Fellows and stood high in the ranks of that order."

Former slave Lewis McCulley buried at Plainfield (1920)

LEWIS McCULLEY
Lewis McCulley, colored, aged one hundred and seven years, the oldest resident of the county, died at the home of his son, Lewis, Jr., Sunday, from an illness of chicken pox, and general debility.

There is some uncertainty about the age of the aged man, but research has verified the belief that he was one hundred seven years old at the time of his death, as an approximated age at the time of his emancipation from slavery, during the Civil War, was more than fifty.

He was a slave in Randolph County, North Carolina, his old master being Joseph McCulley and his young master Robert McCulley, from whom he took the name, McCulley.

He is survived by two sons, Alexandria and Lewis, and a step-son, Frank Jackson of Indianapolis.

Funeral services were held from the home Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Williamson, pastor of the A.M.E. Church, followed by burial at Sugar Grove.
