Alleging cruel and inhuman treatment, Irene Hays Trotter filed suit for a divorce from her husband, William Fred Trotter, Saturday, in the local court. The Trotters were married on December 22, 1920 and separated on March 14, 1933. The plaintiff asks that her maiden name, Irene Hays, be restored, for an absolute divorce and for all proper and general relief in the premises.

Word has been received here of the death of Frank McCurdy, aged 52, at his home in Seattle, Wash., Sunday. No particulars have been learned here.
Mr. McCurdy was born and reared in Danville and is a brother of Mrs. Jennie Newman and a nephew of S.L. McCurdy. Civil War Veteran Jesse MOON Dies in Clayton (1934)

LAST LIBERTY CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIES
Jesse D. Moon, Member of 117th Infantry, Buried Yesterday
Jesse D. Moon, aged 91, a member of Co. B, 117th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War, and the last of the veterans residing in Liberty Township, died at his home in Clayton, Monday morning. He had been confined to his home a number of years but had been able to be about the house until a short time before his death. The immediate cause of death was pneumonia.
Comrade Moon enlisted in Co. B. of the 117th on July 22, 1863. He was honorably discharged February 24, 1864, but re-enlisted in February, 1865, in Co. K, of the 148th Infantry and served until the close of the war.
He was the son of John and Lucinda Moon and was born on a farm between Clayton and Hazelwood and has lived in Wayne, Sullivan and Hendricks counties.
In 1867, he was married to Miss Rebekah Jane Osborne, and to them were born two sons, John and Harvey. After the death of his wife he was married to Fannie Burkhart. In 1911 he moved from the farm to Clayton, where he had resided until his death.
He is survived by two daughters, Grace and Mrs. John Booker of Sullivan, and one son, one granddaughter, one great-grandson, one sister, Mrs. Emma Busby, and one brother, Rigdon Moon, both of Clayton, and one step-son, Roley Moon.
Funeral services were conducted at the Clayton Presbyterian church, yesterday afternoon, in charge of the Rev. Ruben Masten of Belle Union with interment in the Clayton cemetery.

A homeless aged colored man was found dead, last Thursday morning at Ridgway's slaughter house where he had been staying for the past two months. The man was Lee Franklin, age 70. Coroner Tracy O'Brien investigated the death and pronounced the cause as heart trouble. He had no known relatives.
Robert Lawson entered the slaughter house about 10:30 Thursday morning and found the man dead. It is not known at what time he died but there was still some fire in the stove, therefore he probably died sometime during the preceding night. Franklin had lived at Plainfield many years ago. In recent years he had worked at various places in Indiana and neighboring states but made no place his home.

Defendant was on numerous occasions ordered to leave home and to take his clothes and go. She complained of having to cook for him and for a long period of time, he has taken his meals elsewhere. They were married Feb. 18, 1915, and separated Feb. 7, 1931.

Mary Emily Wilhite, a well known musician, died Thursday night in her home at 713 North Delaware Street, Indianapolis, after an illness of several months.
She was a daughter of Wyatt and Marticia Osborne, and was born sixty-nine years ago. She was a successful local teacher of piano and organ for many years, and for several years was head of the department of music of Central Normal College. For twenty years, she was organist at the M.E. church and her lovely music was an inspiration to her hearers. Her ability as a vocalist was marked and she willingly used her gift to cheer and comfort many. She and her husband, Dr. E.M. Wilhite, an optometrist, moved to Indianapolis, twenty-two years ago, and for eighteen years she was organist at the Broadway M.E. church. She resigned in October, 1933, because of failing health.
She was prominent in musical circles in Indianapolis, many years being a teacher of piano and organ at the Metropolitan Conservatory of Music, and the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music.
Survivors are the husband and three sisters, Mrs. Anita Bigbee, nee Ora Osborne, and Mrs. Lindley Carey, nee Hattie Osborne, of Westfield, and Mrs. Ruth Robinson of Santa Monica, Cal. Funeral services were held in the home at 10 o'clock, Monday morning, and burial in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Hendricks County Marriage Applications Index 1910-1912 Added
An index to Hendricks County Marriage Applications Book 4 (which covers 22 December 1910 to 14 December 1912) has been added to the Hendricks County GenWeb site. The index is in progress - so far it covers 1905 through 1912.
ABOUT THESE RECORDS: Beginning in May 1905, Indiana law required the recording of marriage applications, which included biographical details about the bride and the groom, as well as their parents. In Hendricks County, the information from these applications was kept in a separate set of books from the marriage record until June 1950.

Hendricks County Probate Records - Work Session in Danville
Want to get a glimpse at what life was like in the mid-1800's? Stop by the Danville Public Library on Saturday, April 6 any time from 9 am to 4 pm to help unfold and organize some of Hendricks County's probate records.
This is part of the Indiana Genealogical Society's continuing effort to preserve and digitize Hendricks County's early probate records, which are currently stored in the courthouse basement. Unfolding and organizing the documents is crucial preparation for the end goal - being digitized and put online for free access at the Indiana Genealogical Society's website.
Since this project began, over 2,700 probate records have been worked on, and over 700 of them are online already. These records include receipts from doctors for making house calls, orders for tombstones (including the inscriptions to be written on them), and even original documents for Civil War service and a land purchase from the federal government.

Mrs. Ella Campbell was granted a divorce from George G. Campbell, owner of The Brownsburg Record, in the Boone Circuit Court before Judge Hornaday, last Tuesday. Mrs. Campbell was awarded custody of their two children and Campbell was ordered to pay $50 per month for the children's support. It was understood that an alimony settlement was made out of court. The case was sent to Lebanon for trial from Danville and due to the prominence of the couple the action created considerable interest.

Columbus C. Cornett, aged 78 years, died at his home at Jacksonville, Saturday afternoon. He had been in failing health for some time but had been confined only about two weeks. He was born near Clayton and has lived in this community his entire life. March 4, 1875, he was united in marriage to Miss Amanda Maddox. They had two daughters and one son, the only one now living is Mrs. Clarence Woskum. Others who survive are the widow, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Clayton Baptist church, but after moving near Cherry Grove church he attended services there, and the funeral, which was held at the home was conducted by the pastor of that church. Burial was in the Clayton cemetery. Mrs. Cornett, who has also been seriously ill, is better.

Danville, Ind - Nov 15 - The trial of Erroll Key, 19 years old for the killing of his cousin, Forest Miller, in a fight at a gravel pit near North Salem on Friday morning, June 4, was begun in the Hendricks Circuit Court this afternoon. Key has been a student in the North Salem HS. The mothers of the boys are daughters of the late Joseph Wynn, who, during his life, was one of the heaviest land owners of that region.
There was trouble between the families over possession of the gravel pit and when Erroll Key and his father, Taswell Key went to the pit and met Charles Miller and his sons, Alva and Forest, a fight ensued. It is charged that Erroll used an automatic pistol given him by his father.
It is alleged with instructions to use. Errol Key has been in jail since the day of the shooting. All of the time today was taken up in an effort to select a jury.

An index to Hendricks County Marriage Applications Book 3 (which covers 19 December 1908 to 21 December 1910) has been added to the Hendricks County GenWeb site. The index is in progress - so far it covers 1905 through 1910.
ABOUT THESE RECORDS: Beginning in May 1905, Indiana law required the recording of marriage applications, which included biographical details about the bride and the groom, as well as their parents. WIDOW OF FORMER NURSERY HEAD DIES AT PLAINFIELD
Mrs. Anna M. Hobbs, age eighty-two, widow of Cyrus May Hobbs, nationally known nurseryman, died at her home in Plainfield, Sunday morning, after a long illness.
She was born in Washington County, near Salem, and moved to Bridgeport in 1875 with her parents, Oliver and Mary Albertson, who founded the Bridgeport nurseries, now operated as C.M. Hobbs & Sons. Her marriage took place in 1876. Her husband became a partner in the nursery enterprise, and on the death of Mr. Albertson, succeeded to ownership of the business. At the time of his death, seven years ago, he was a trustee of Purdue University. Mrs. Hobbs was a birthright member of Friends church and was educated in Quaker institutions.
Surviving are one daughter, Miss Carrie M. Hobbs, Plainfield; three sons, Oliver A. Hobbs and Fred M. Hobbs, Plainfield, and Harry W. Hobbs, of Indianapolis; two brothers, Albert Albertson, Caldwell, Idaho, and Emory Albertson, Whittier, Cal.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home, the Rev. Norvel Webb officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Charles Kersey, age 19, attempted suicide by drinking carbolic acid about 12:30, Saturday night, at the apartment of Morris Patterson in the Danville hotel. He was taken to the St. Vincent's hospital that night in a serious condition but has showed improvement each day. He has a chance of recovery now unless unexpected complications develop. However, he is still at the hospital.
Charles was found by Patterson about fifteen minutes after he had drunk the poison and Dr. Carl Parker was called. Only a small quantity of the acid had reached the stomach but his throat and esophagus was badly burned.
Kersey had attended a dance earlier that night and had made several remarks which showed that he had been meditating the act. On returning he stopped at his home where he evidently got the poison. On parting from his friends he had told them goodbye and appeared in good spirits.

A suit for the dissolution of the partnership of Jesse Dooley and Bert Dooley was filed in the circuits court during the week by Jesse Dooley. The plaintiff also asks for an accounting and restraining order against the defendant. The complaint claims that the Dooleys entered into a partnership to manage a farm in March 1931 with each sharing equal in the profits or losses. The plaintiff claims the defendant has sold produce without dividing the dividends and that she has not received any of the $750 that she gave to equip the farm. She asks for an immediate restraining order to prevent the defendant from disposing of any of the property before the court can make a settlement.

Frank STONE Shot By Brother-In-Law (1927)

FRANK STONE MAY DIE FROM BULLET WOUNDS
Frank Stone, age 21, son of Leslie Stone, formerly living southwest of town, is in an Indianapolis hospital, possibly dying from the effects of five bullets fired into his body by John Raridan, Stone's brother-in-law.
Raridan and his wife had been having trouble and Raridan had been gone from home for several days. Tuesday, Stone accompanied his sister downtown and then returned with her to her home. As they reached the home, Raridan came out and saying, "Let's not have any argument," began to shoot. Some of his shots took effect in Stone's mouth, one in an arm and one in a shoulder. Mark Stone was in the house and pacified his brother-in-law. The officers took Raridan to jail where he was charged with assault and battery and intent to kill.

Many in this county were saddened to learn of the death on Feb. 20, of Sarah Grimes Dillon, at her home in Cincinnati. Funeral and interment at that place on the 22nd. She was the daughter of Elias and Sarah Phillips Grimes, and was born near Coatesville, May 14, 1858. All the younger years of her life were spent in that community. She was of a kind and lovable nature, and all with whom she came in contact felt the influence of a sweet Christian character. To know her was to love her. Besides her husband, John Dillon, she is survived by three brothers, John W. Grimes, of Long Beach, Cal.; Nelson Grimes, of Newton, Iowa, and Samuel B. Grimes, of Zionsville, and one sister, Susannah Kendall, of Indianapolis, and a number of other relatives. Surely a good woman has claimed her reward.

Among the items they've found: letterhead from 1899 (shown below) containing a receipt from Leachman & Seller, a Danville business that dealt with buggies and wagons, as well as farming implements, stoves and hardware.

FamilySearch Adds Indiana World War I Draft Registration Cards
FamilySearch has added Indiana's records to its database, United States, World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918. After the United States officially entered the war in April 1917, there were 3 drafts held for men ages 18-45. Local draft boards created registration cards on residents who were in this age range and thus could potentially be called up to serve in the military. These draft registration cards have a lot of genealogical information on them, including their birthdate, street address and occupation, as well as a physical description. NOTE: FamilySearch's database is in progress - currently the digital images for Indiana can only be browsed; eventually they will be indexed.
