Danville gets its first color television (1956)

COLOR TV MAKES DEBUT IN DANVILLE LAST WEEK
Mr. and Mrs. Rawleigh Baker entertained members of the press Thursday evening at a special showing of the new RCA color television. So far as it's known, this is the first color TV set in Danville. It has been reported that there are three other color sets now in this county.
By this time next year, color television will be a common-place thing. But at the present time, it is a new and exciting form of entertainment. As I watched a full-hour program, I was most conscious of the stars' hair. On a black and white program, you accept all hair has been dark or light. While the hair had a natural look, it sometimes looked more like a wig than the real thing, with each hair in its proper place.
Woodwork shown on the screen looked natural, as did the pastel-colored settings. Lipstick and fire extinguishers were shown in a peculiar shade of purple. During a commercial a red-haired hostess presented the commentary. Redheads really show up on color tv. However, a twist of a dial can ruin any girl's complexion.
Another advantage, or maybe disadvantage, color television can make your mouth water when it comes to scenes of food. Although I enjoyed my first colored tv show, I imagine a spectacular, with brightly colored costumes, would show up more effectively than a drama show.

Brownsburg purchases land for new park (1958)

According to a newspaper article, in May 1958 the Brownsburg town council arranged to buy a 39 acre piece of land from Mrs. Ivory Tolle, at a cost of $25,000, in order to build a park. The land was described as being "immediately north of the railroad" and "at the northwest edge of the town."
NOTE: Today this park is known as Arbuckle Acres (address 200 North Green Street).

Danvile gets direct dial telephone service (1954)
According to an article in the September 30, 1954 issue of The Republican, Danville was scheduled to get direct-dial telephone service beginning on Friday, November 12 at 8 pm, courtesy of the Indiana Bell Telephone Co. The change meant that all of Danville's 1,800 manual telephones had to be switched over to the new rotary-dialed telephones, a project which cost $135,000.
Before the switch, if you wanted to call someone, you had to lift the receiver on your manual telephone, which engaged the operator. You then had to tell your operator what 3 digit phone number you wanted, or ask them to look up the 3 digit number from a directory. In either case, the operator was the one who actually placed the call.
After the switch, everyone in the Danville telephone exchange would have a phone number that began with SH (referred to as "Sherwood") and 5, followed by four digits. For example, the Weaver Funeral Home had a phone number of SH 5-4411, and when they told it to people they could use the shorthand version, "Sherwood 5 4411". Many Danville phone numbers today start with 745; if you look at those buttons on the telephone, the "S" corresponds to 7, the "H" corresponds to "4", and then the 5.
Before the switch, Indiana Bell held programs for the public showing them how to dial, which included picking up the phone and waiting to hear the dial tone/hum before beginning to dial.
To make a long-distance call, you still had to contact the operator first, EXCEPT if you were making a call to New Winchester or North Salem. Those two exchanges had special 3-digit prefixes you could use to dial the call yourself.

Plainfield library digitizes Hendricks County family history files
The Indiana Room of the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library has digitized their collection of family history files. There are almost 475 files about various Hendricks County families. These files were compiled by their descendants and donated to the library. Some of these files were donated as far back as 1968.

Loren Ray MITCHELL dies in fire (1953)

SEVEN-YEAR-OLD BELLEVILLE LAD BURNED TO DEATH YESTERDAY
A 7-year-old Belleville grade school boy was burned to death yesterday noon while playing in a "playhouse" in the haymow of his father's barn, 2 miles south of Belleville on State Road 39.
Loren Ray Mitchell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Mitchell, was home from school yesterday because the heating plant at the Belleville grade school was out of operation. He and a brother, Larry, age 9, were in the "playhouse" when the barn caught fire.
The cause of the fire was believed to be defective wiring. The barn contained a large amount of hay, five or six calves, a corn picker and some other small farm equipment.
The charred body of the lad was found in the southeast corner of the razed structure. The mass was identified by Coroner F.N. Wright as that of a human body.
The brother, Larry, escaped injury, but apparently the fire burned out the side of the barn causing it to cave-in on the other land.
Fire departments from Danville, Plainfield and Clayton were called to put out the fire, but it was beyond control.
It was reported at the scene of the tragedy that Loren had eight brothers and sisters, the youngest being 1 1/2 years old.

According to a newspaper article, on October 15, 1958, the Danville State Bank opened a branch in Avon (it already had a branch in Clayton). The bank was on US 36, at the site of the former Avon Community Building. Among the features it offered was service through a drive-up window, which was the first in the county.
Hursel C. Disney, Mrs. Bess Miller, Mrs. Crawford Taylor of Danville and Mrs. Arthur Davis of Avon were to be the employees.

Plainfield genealogy group to discuss newspaper research
The Family History Hounds genealogy group will meet on Thursday, September 1 from 1 to 3 pm at the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library. The meeting will be held upstairs in the library's meeting rooms. Leigh Anne Johnson from the Indiana State Library will give a presentation on using newspapers in research, including how newspaper items can piece together family ties at a time when other records don't exist.

James Clayton SPEAR sues for loss of eye (1953)

YOUTH ASKS $15,000 FOR LOSS OF ONE EYE
A rye beard which destroyed the sight of his eye is the basis of a suit for $15,000 filed Friday in circuit court by James Clayton Spear, age 19, against Eugene Mitchell, Cleo Worrell, and Lester Worrell. Since the plaintiff is under age, the suit was filed by his father, Herman Spear.
According to the complaint, the defendants operate a grain threshing business. It is alleged that young Spears, who lives south of North Salem, was employed by the defendants on July 1, 1953, and was threshing grain on the Everett Hardwick farm, 5 miles northwest of Danville, when a rye beard got in his eye.
The complaint avers that it was necessary to remove the injured eye and install an artificial eye.
The suit charges that the defendants failed to comply with the state Workmen's Compensation Act and did not carry insurance on their employees.
NOTE: According to Hendricks County Circuit Court order book 103 (18 September 1954 - 15 October 1955), on September 28, 1954, in case #19454 (James Clayton Spear b/n/f Herman Spear vs. Eugene Mitchell, Cleo Worrell & Lester Worrell), the jury found for the defendants. The plaintiff was ordered to pay for the court costs.

Joseph CARTER dies of polio (1954)

COATESVILLE MAN DIES FROM POLIO
Joseph O. Carter, a farmer of the Coatesville community, died Thursday afternoon in the Robert Long Hospital, Indianapolis, from bulbar polio. Mr. Carter became ill Monday morning and was taken to the hospital Wednesday where he was put in an iron lung.
Born in 1916 in Clay Township, he was the son of Arthur Lee Carter and Maude Carter Darnell. He was married to Marion McClure in 1940. He was a member of the Amo Baptist Church and a deacon in the church. He was a graduate of the Amo High School after which he began his farming career.
Funeral services were Sunday afternoon from the Amo Baptist Church in charge of the Rev. A.E. Chastain. Burial was in the Amo Cemetery.
Survivors are the widow, Marian; two sons, Roger Lee and Dale Allen; his mother, Mrs. Maude Carter Darnell, and a sister, Mrs. Hugh Isenberg, all of Coatesville.

Indiana National Guard opens armory in Danville (1954)
According to a November 11, 1954 newspaper article, the armory was formally dedicated on November 9, 1954. The cost of the armory was $190,000. Construction had been delayed because of a strike by the cement workers.

According to a April 2, 1953 article, Lieutenant Colonel Charles W. Sampson, Facilities Officer for the Adjutant General of the Indiana National Guard, placed the corner stakes for the building at the construction site in March 1953.
NOTE: The Armory is still at the same site today - its address is 1245 East Main Street (aka Old US 36), and it is across the street from the hospital (Hendricks Regional Health).
According to a September 30, 1954 newspaper article, the armory's governing board was to consist of Captain Fred Bohm (Indianapolis), Lieutenant Richard Helton (Danville) and Ed Stevenson (Danville).

Teacher Edward BRINEGAR charged with assaulting a student (1949)

According to an April 1949 article, Edward Brinegar, who taught 5th and 6th grades at the Amo school, was charged with assault and battery in Hendricks County Circuit Court. The charge, which was brought on behalf of Ray O'Dell, Sr., stemmed from a March 18 incident with O'Dell's son, 12-year-old Ray A. O'Dell, Jr. Brinegar's lengthy statement (published in the article) referred to the paddling he had done of his student for violating school rules. He waived arraignment and pleaded not guilty.

The Brownsburg Branches genealogy group will meet on Tuesday, August 2 from 1 to 3 pm at the Brownsburg Public Library. The meeting will be held in the library's computer lab. 37-year-old Blanche HOOVER a student at Lizton High School (1949)

37 YEAR OLD LIZTON WOMAN FINISHING HIGH SCHOOL
Mrs. Blanche Hoover, 37-year-old wife of a Lizton farmer and carpenter, has entered the junior class in the Lizton High School in an effort to meet college entrance requirements.
Mrs. Hoover rides the school bus daily with her three children who attend the grade school at Lizton. Her daughter, Kay, is a first grader; two sons in school are Morris, third grade, and Lewis, fourth grade. According to teachers who have had the children they are above the average for their age. Mrs. Hoover re-entered school with a very high scholastic record.
She attended up to her junior year at the Zionsville schools when she quit to get married. Now, she feels that will need a higher education in case she might someday have to make a living for her children. Mrs. Hoover's tentative plan is to further her education in a college where she will enter the field of psychology.
During the noon hour Mrs. Hoover works in the school lunch room preparing tables and serving food. She is a member of the Lizton High School Glee Club, but is not engaging in other extracurricular activities. She is very active in the Cub Scout work in her community.

Indianapolis Raceway Park to be built in Brownsburg (1959)

According to a September 1959 newspaper article, the promoters of the proposed Indianapolis Raceway Park filed a petition with the Hendricks County Plan Commission for a zoning variance so they could build the racetrack. The 155 acre piece of land was described as being between US 136 and 30th Street (aka County Road 300 North) east of Hunter Road (aka County Road 1000 East). The project was estimated to cost $250,000, and the promoters were listed as Rodger Ward (winner of the 1959 Indy 500), Tom Binford (president of the United States Auto Club) and Frank Dickey (a promoter from New Bremen, Ohio).

Adoption of Donald Dwight HART (1952)

According to a legal notice, in July 1952 there was a petition filed by John Richard Olvey and Mary Kathlyn Olvey in the Hendricks County Circuit Court (case #91) to adopt Donald Dwight Hart, a minor. His biological father, Miles Donald Hart, was listed as not being a resident of Indiana and not having paid support money for more than 1 year. The case was scheduled to be heard in court on September 2, 1952.

Danville adopts one-way traffic around courthouse square (1959)

In March 1959, in an effort to ease congestion, the Danville Town Council passed an ordinance to change the traffic flow around the courthouse square. What had previously been two-way traffic was changed to one-way traffic, going in a counterclockwise direction (meaning traffic from US 36 would enter the square by going south on the west side (aka Jefferson Street), then going east on the south side of the square (aka Marion Street), and then going north on the east side of the square (aka Washington Street).
An earlier article (March 5, 1959) mentions that they had initially wanted to make the one-way traffic go in a clockwise direction - with traffic from US 36 entering the square by going south on the east side of the square (aka Washington Street), then going west on the south side of the square (aka Marion Street) and then going north on the west side of the square (aka Jefferson Street).
The articles noted that some business owners were against the change, wanting the traffic to remain two-way for fear that they would lose customers. The Hendricks County Sheriff and the Danville police chief were both in favor of the change.

Plainfield genealogy group to tour Indiana State Library
The Plainfield library's Family History Hounds genealogy group will meet on Thursday, July 7 at 12:50 pm at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis. Jamie Dunn will give a tour of the library's Genealogy Division, including the resources they have for other states besides Indiana. Afterwards, there will be time to do some of your own research. Participants should gather in the library's café area, just inside the north entrance.

Ancestry.com adds Indiana vital records databases

If you have a personal subscription to Ancestry.com, or your local library has an institutional subscription, you can access their new databases for:
- Indiana birth records (1907-1940)
- Indiana death records (1899-2011)
- Indiana marriage records (1958-2005)
These 3 databases are a result of an agreement announced in October 2014 between Ancestry.com and the Indiana state government. One of the terms of the agreement is that Ancestry has the exclusive right to host these databases for the first 3 years.
The majority of these records were digitized from existing microfilm; therefore the quality of the image may vary.
NOTE: Indiana began requiring the recording of births and deaths in 1882; however, at that time, the records were kept by the health department in each county. It was only in January 1900 that copies of death records began to be sent to the state, and in October 1907 that copies of birth records began to be sent to the state. Similarly, a state law in July 1958 began requiring a copy of marriage records (which reside in the courthouse in each county) to be sent on to the state. The state's version of the marriage record may not have all the information (or signatures) that may be seen in the county's version.
